Hi, I need some help please. I have just heard from a friend that when you go to australia to work as a nurse (i am a child's nurse so I don't know if this makes a difference), you have to retrain for a year even if you have experience and you are on a student wage. Could anyone tell me if this is true as I have never heard or read this anywhere. thanks:D

Rubbish. Once you have been skills assessed for, a PR visa by the nursing board or by the hospital who are sponsoring you for 457 visa, you get paid in accordance with your years experience. For instance if you have been qualified 4 yrs you get paid as Div1 nurse year 4. Well that's how it works where I am.

You also get a higher qualification allowance on top of that if you have a relevant post grad certificate or are "double trained" ie: nurse and midwife or general and psych trained etc.

Can also confirm that what you were told is rubbish.
Once you have your ANMC skills assessment and register with a state nursing board, you work as a registered nurse and are paid accordingly depending on years experience, like itsjulie says.

Thanks for the replies. I will be qualified for near a year when we go, but I have 22 years experience as an auxiliary on intensive care, were I assisted with all procedures and 8 years experience on a ward, were I was allocated my own patients the only thing I didn't do was give drugs expect for pain relief and inhalers (I have always worked in paeds). We can stay until a year is upbut would be itching to going if we have the visa in our hot little hands.:D
