Wink Nurse wanting to convert to midwife in Oz

Hello
I am new to this site having found it in my search for info!! I am a Registered Nurse (Emergency & Forensics) and am wondering if any Universities in Oz (either SA or NSW) allow non Austalians to study there and get funding like any other resident? I have a permenant visa already and we are moving back hopefully next year - my hubby is a chippie so it seems I need to be the main bread winner when we get there.
I have two main questions:
1. Can I study in Australia and get funded? Are there any midwifery conversion courses that are less than 3 years long? Any recommendations?
2. Does anyone know if the medical provision to the police is only doctors or are nurses now doing the detainees in custody assessments?

We lived in Cronulla before (moved back here 2005 after my Dad died - v homesick...) but made a major error and want to go back. It is me (38) my hubby (35) and our daughters 4 and 2. We are thinking maybe Bulli / Wollongong but know nothing about it really apart from a memorable camping trip so any family lifestyle input would be great......
Sorry I am rambling
Many thanks x

Hi Bubsblooms,

There are quite a few Unis offering conversion from RN to Midwife through Graduate Diploma - takes a year through external study but you need to also negotiate hands-on midwifery work at an approved hospital. I have met several people who have done it this way. Charles Sturt Uni in Wagga Wagga has a good reputation for their course - See CSUs site http://www.csu.edu.au/courses/postgraduate/midwifery/ . If you have PR then your fees should be the same as an Aussie student.

Might be worth posting a message on the Nursing Forum on this site - may be someone in Aus who's doing the midwifery course already?

As for your question about police work - Nurses have taken over many of the duties of Police Medical Officers at some police facilities in NSW. Also, I have recently seen a job advertised for nurses for detainees at police stations in Sydney (Surrey Hills I think?). Sorry, but I cant remember where I saw it advertised.

Hope this helps.

Many many thanks for all that information - it makes it all seem more achievable when what I am doing now might be an option there
Best wishes
Emma
