We had 37 today its early spring, tomorrow should be cooler but soon many places in OZ, not just brisbane will be that hot most days, to us working here, its not something we dream about.
Queenslands suffering early in the season because we have had drought for 5 months, I cant tell you how strange it is to an aussie when you read about our 'perfect' rain free days, humans need water so not really perfect is it? Read some post the other day talking about the lush scenery! someone should look forward to when they arrive, but its actually brown and crispy, the air even in Noosa three hours+ from the bushfires is hazy and smoky.
Queensland usually fares pretty well, often better than the southern states by summer because we nearly always get our tropical rains, they might bring humidity but they put a swift end to many a bushfire.
Summer in Europe is the bit you look forward to, like everyting down under its the reverse here.

If your sister is over there I think you probably realise the seriousness of it. Its a strange sense of humour that keeps emergency services going I think - we had it in the police in the UK, sometimes the only way you could cope with the seriousness was to keep a jokey front going. I'm finding it similar here - although the Firies are obviously working flat out, the sense of humour prevails - someone at work managed to get through on a mobile today to a guy out west somewhere, and he was being quite jokey about it - "sorry I haven't filled in your staff satisfaction questionnaire yet, but my pen has just melted" kind of thing.
Its a vital thing that keeps all emergency workers going - I think a lot of nurses/doctors are the same?

And yes totally agree, when I read all these posts about lush scenery etc makes me wonder what people are basing it all on, however alot of people moving, have never been to Australia, let alone lived there!!

Strange as it may seem, having most of my relies in Bribane and surrounding areas (we go back a few generations!!) , we are off to Perth WA as we both preferred it to Brisbane.
We have spent loads of time in and around Brisbane over the last 20 years and there is plenty to do and see etc, but as I said just found Perth was more for us, purely a personal thing and only 5 hrs by plane from Brissy so we will be popping over a few times (Sorry meant struggling with long flight etc )

The british fire brigade is no different. They have to joke or would lose the plot big time. Unfortunately some people don't understand. Kevan has come home on many an occasion having dealt with the most horrendous fires/accidents and if he didn't make a joke of some element of the day, I would be seriously worried about him.
It is the blackest of humour, I get it but most outside the services are usually very shocked.
Hope things aren't too bad there. Noticed on my UBD that the Pacific pines backburning is very near the school. What happens then, do they carry on or what?
