Although it was a pain in the b*m having to learn all those extra road rules about who gets priority at junctions, and what to do when near trams, I feel it is important for ALL drivers to understand the local road rules.
This new policy is a BIG negative for road safety as far as I'm concerned - especially as the Victorian road death toll is very high, and the drivers here have a style that borders on the Italian at times
Also, the theory test is not that difficult - they only ask about things that, as a responsible driver, you should know anyway when driving round in VIC.

Anya,
I agree, there should be a compulsary driving test where you must demonstrate :
Driving at excessive speed
Driving with total disregard for others
Failing to indicate until the last minute
Failing to indicate
Driving too close to the car in front
Talking on mobile phone whilst holding a cappachino in the other hand
Refusal to let people out of side roads even when the traffic is going nowhere
Wearing a red baseball cap upon completion of all of the above

All of which should be done in the largest & post powerful 4WD you can find!
If only it were funny...

Personally I find the indication a lot better here (Vic) than in the UK. Also most people respect the speed limits.

I was thinking exactly the same thing before I saw your post!
Especially those coming from anywhere within the M25.....I find the driving here a whole lot more relaxing.
One thing that used to scare the heck out of me, in the UK, was the way people would just pull out of side streets into moving traffic....took me a long time to get used to that!!
But, I figure if I can survive Hanger Lane, I can drive anywhere in the world!!

The Somerville question brings up a complicated answer. The simple answer is great, however we don't really have much to do with the town itself: we live out on the Somerville/Tyabb border. Somerville itself is not particularly interesting; however its location is great. It is close to Mornington (20 mins), Frankston (15 mins), Hastings (10 mins) and Dandenong (30 mins). All of the beaches on the peninsula are within easy reach (20-40 mins) - we've not yet run out of new beaches to visit. Outside of rush hour Melbourne is about 1 hr away (St Kilda is exactly 1 hr without using the toll road, Flemington Racetrack is 1 hr 5 mins using the toll road). You can get a large house and plot for very little money around here. You can even get enough for agistment!
All in all I'm loving it.
Cheers
Alistair
