Number of Kiwi immigrants falls sharply
April 22, 2004 - 12:15AM
The number of migrants to New Zealand fell sharply in March compared with the same time a year ago as a rash of scandals and concerns about safety kept Chinese students away, government figures showed.
China accounted for more than half the drop with at least 800 fewer arrivals than at the same time last year in the same month a year earlier, Statistics New Zealand said in a statement.
Most were in the 15-24 year age group,
Chinese state-owned media have reported that Chinese students in New Zealand are becoming involved in prostitution, gambling, drug abuse and gang activity, and that at least 20 foreign students were murdered in New Zealand in the first half of last year.
The financial collapse of two New Zealand foreign language schools, which resulted in several thousand foreign scholars being stranded and out of pocket also did little to enhance the country's reputation as a destination for Chinese students.
Meanwhile, annual migrant arrivals continued to rise, but at a slower rate than in the previous year.
In the same period, 11,000 people left for Australia, compared with 11,300 in the March 2003 year, and 16,100 in the March 2002 year.

Net outflow of migrants from NZ

March figures issued today by Statistics New Zealand (SNZ) showed more people left New Zealand for the long-term than migrated here, the first time since May 2001 that monthly migration exceeded immigration.
Permanent and long-term departures in March 2004 were 5800, while arrivals were 5500, SNZ said in a statement. Non-New Zealand citizen arrivals were down 1400, with China accounting for more than half of the drop with 800 fewer arrivals.
There were net inflows of migrants from China (7400), India (4100) and Japan (2100) in the year ended March 2004, and also a substantial net inflow from Britain -- 10,300, up 43 per cent on the March 2003 year figure.
At the same time, 11,000 people left for Australia. There were 11,300 departures to Australia in the March 2003 year, and 16,100 in the March 2002 year.
