No-fee banking in Queensland
Just wanted to find out if anyone has come across, got an account with Queensland Teacher Credit Union: http://www.qtcu.com.au ?
One of my wife's colleagues has an account with them and says that they don't charge transfer / withdrawal fees.
Don't let the name put you off, whilst the union is only available in Queensland, you don't have to be a teacher to set up an account.
Anyone know anything about them? Sounds like a cheaper option than the 'high street' banks.
Cheers
Rob

During our previous life in NSW, we originally opened account with Westpac. However, once we had settled into employment I joined the Illawarra Credit Union, and from then on always banked with them. Fees are much lower than the banks but service was always better.
Will be looking to join a credit union again when we return, so thanks for this info.

Many banks will give a fee free bank account if you have a mortgage with them.
HSBC, amongst some others, have a fee free bank account as long as you stick within the transaction limitations. Many people seem to be able to find fee free banking by checking what the banks offer, against what they need.
But others, who just use any bank without concern, will end up paying fees.
Westpac was mentioned earlier, and one example of fees on a Fee Free Westpac account, but withdrawal at another banks ATM is:
FEE - Balance Enquiry at NAB ATM $1.50
Cash Withrawal $50.00
FEE - Withdrawal at NAB ATM $1.50
This can and does happen on many banks, not just Westpac. It's an example of what can happen when caught out in the wrong place with no cash
