I am starting work in Melbourne on the 2nd June 2008. I am on a 457 visa and now starting to panic. I am trying to work out what monhly pay I will receive 70k and Living away from home 40K.
My children are 8 and 4 and need schools (catholic), where do I start?
Also I need to apply for Medical Healthcare, ahain where do I start?
This job offer has come out of the blue, and decided to take the chance when offered.
Please Help:

Hi,
I like this salary calculator with the sliding scale on the side showing you lifestyle
http://payrise.careerone.com.au/
Calculated take home pay includes 9% superannuation deduction - which can be claimed back if you leave Oz. Plus 1.5% is deducted for Medicare levy, this can be claimed back at the end of the tax year June as a 457 visa holder is not entitled to claim Medicare. Although, there is a recipricol agreement with the UK to allow UK citizens access to the Health Care system here - not sure if this applies to 457 visa holders. Guys (non UK 457 visa holders) were I work are paying between 100-300 dollars p/m for private cover.
My children go to a Catholic schools in Bayside/Kingston area of Melbourne. 2 go to St Josephs primary school in Black Rock. Very nice, small friendly school
http://www.sjblkrk.melb.catholic.edu.au/
fees are about $2000 per year for both children.
My eldest boy attends an excellent De la Salle Catholic all boys school in Mentone
http://www.stbedes.melb.catholic.edu.au/
Fees about $3000-3500 per year which I think is cheap for the standard of education and facilities offered.
Living Away from Home allowance allows you to deduct things like rent/flights/moving costs/an allowance for kids/wife which is deducted from your pay prior to be taxed. Quite a big saving.
We live in Sandringham, about 5 mins walk from the beach, in a relatively small home for $800 p/w includi9ng bills (but my company pays so no issue for me). Train station 5 - 10 mins away with trains every 10 mins to CBD (takes 25 mins).
Hope this info helps.
