Nice commuter town for Sydney?
My husband has been offered a job in Sydney so we are potentially looking to move to Australia in 12 months. We would like to live outside of Sydney in a nice town which would be easy to commute into the city. Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks!

Thank you for reading my post 😊
I'm not entirely sure but would imagine it to be in the cbd due to the nature of his job.

So that really only leaves the following and should be done in tandem with Welcome to Sydney Trains
- Blue Mountains
- Central Coast
- Wollongong (and just to its north) - this would be my pick
- South West of Sydney - Picton way
- Richmond and out there.
In reality Newcastle should be commutable. Its a 2 hour drive so you would expect a train to be about 1h 30mins - wrong - train is 3 hours.
Some do consider Manly and Cronulla as nice towns out of Sydney that are commutable.

I would second The Blue Mountains - but only the higher mountains - the lower mountain villages are a bit meh.
Another place worth considering is Bowral - very pretty country town with direct train access to Sydney. About a 2hr commute.
As Beoz says, there are no high speed trains in NSW so you will be faced with a fairly lengthy commute if you want to live somewhere nice that isn't in the city.

there's a reason why real estate is very expensive close to the CBD - the travel is a PITA.
It's faster to travel from London to Paris by train than from Blue Mountains to Sydney despite the latter route being 3-4x longer.

Well it would depend on what part of the Blue Mountains you were travelling from...

Here is one example. The Sydney Metro Project. Which is great and all but most of this route is already catered for. They should be looking at improving the already existing lines to carry trains that can move at 150km/h. Not exactly high speed but fast enough to make a big different.

This is an interesting map. It really does suggest "build it and they will come"

The commute downtown is just under an hour, direct line, and you get on at the beginning of the line so no worries about getting a seat. Plus it's a wonderful place - a true beach town of a gem - and no thru traffic or anything like that.

I was in Sydney last week and took the ferry to Manly and thought to myself that it would be a great spot to live and get the ferry to work in the CBD (if that's where you're working). Although I can imagine that the first few ferries in the morning and the ones in rush hour coming back must be rammed?
