Cairns has quite a few motels.

If you are travelling out of school holiday time it may not be worth booking.
We recently got 'standby' rates on hotels in Sydney simply by booking through the accomodation sevice at the airport. Most tourist information offices can get you accomodation.

Depends on your schedule but it is often worth making it up as you go along and stop at places you like the look of.

Good luck

I stayed at the Grace Hotel in Sydney. Not the best and certainly not the worst.

Hi there I've stayed at, and am going back to bondi homestay which is just up the road from bondi beach. It's lovely and does the best scrambled eggs and smoked salmon breakfast in with the price!

Hi Footie Chick,

We stayed in Quest apartments last year in Melbourne, we stayed in Fitzroy in the heart of the city and also in the suburb of Kew, very clean and staff helpful too.

Enjoy yourselves

Hi footie,

What sort of price range are you looking at?

Medina Apartments have a few serviced apartments at very convenient locations in Sydney and Melbourne, as well as other major Australian cities.

http://www.medinaapartments.com.au/

We spent 2 Aussie winters in Medina Grand Melbourne while working out there, and also stayed at Medina Grand Sydney on holidays. Services at both were great and apartments had everything you need.

The Mirac group also runs a number of nice serviced apartments under the names "Sebel" and "Quay West" in the cities, and luxury resorts in popular holiday locations:

http://www.mirvac.com.au/

For Cairns, I would recommend staying at Palm Cove if you want to get away from the backpackers. All hotels listed in the following link are nice:
http://www.hotelclub.net/hotel.reser.../Palm_Cove.htm

We stayed at Angsana and had a few meals at the Sebel Reef House and Clarion Resort restaurants. All were very enjoyable experiences.

Good luck and have fun,
Mrs JTL

Thanks guys

Have already sorted Melbourne and just about to book Cairns but Sydney is throwing up problems everywhere at the moment. It is the bed situation that no one can cater for...

We need a queen and a twin and we seemed to have booked the most popular weekend as most places are booked.

Thanks for the Hotel club recommendation they have been really useful.

You may have more luck if you look outside of the centre.
We stopped at the Airport Holiday Inn a couple of times. Does not sound too exciting but there is a train station next door and you can get to the Opera house etc. in a few minutes.

Good luck

Thanks once again for all of your suggestions, hopefully and fingers crossed we have booked all the places to stay now. Sydney was a major problem but being a weekend we didn`t expect it to be easy.

Lets just say footie will be staying somewhere nice

hi,
i know its too late now, but just for future reference we used a site called www.wotif.com , this is a last minute booking site but we found it really good when we went to Australia in feb.If i remember rightly you can do a advanced search, saying exactly what you want and it only gives you a list of hotels that has your requirements. This was good for us as we needed to have broadband access.
have fun
