NI and bank accounts
My partner and I are moving to Melbourne in jan and we were wondering what we do about a bank account. is it possible to get an Australian before we head over?
plus what do we do about national insurance?

Re: NI and bank accounts
We opened an account online before we moved over with NAB, then just activated the account and picked up cards when we arrived.
NI is a UK thing not Australian, but you need to get a TFN (tax file number), you can do that online when you get here. It won't let you apply online from overseas. Takes about two weeks to come through so do it as soon as you arrive.

You can continue to pay NI if you want. (Personally I don't think it's worth it - but each to their own) Class 2 is is much cheaper than class 3. So wait till you get a job and then request class 2 payment. Also if you have paid in 30 years then don't bother as you won't get any more benefit from paying extra.
