Hello, What can you all tell me about Newcastle and its surrounding areas?

Hubby is hoping to work at the Airport and so an area up to 30/40 minutes away to live in, School recommendations for a 5 year old. Where not to go to. I suppose these questions get asked always but hope you can give me do's and don'ts as not sure where to start.
