Very fond of Newcastle, would have had no issue moving there at all if I were independently wealthy and didn't need to work. What do you do? Some occupations are more portable than others.

Agree. Can think of worse places to live. Bring on the medium speed rail between Syd and Newcastle and I would.

I don't think Newcastle is for the hardened urbanite who spends their free time enjoying theaters, galleries and so on. But it is pretty good for the person who wants to balance what a city-that's-a-bit-like-a-large-town can offer with incredible coastline, lower population density, and a generally laid back, uncongested vibe. It has the whole industrial thing going on too and makes me think of Bristol about 15 years ago but with all the hip stuff somewhat muted and an abundance of "lifestyle" pluses.

Which is exactly why plenty of locals are ambivalent about the prospect ... you can keep your Sydney crowds and property costs thank you very much!

I've popped in just in the nick of time!
Newie is a great place to live. It's a city (hehe, big town) surrounded by glorious beaches and vineyards.
We have a theatre so no need to miss out on shows plus lots of bands come to play in the vineyards.
The city centre looks run down in places as all the shops left to go to the big shopping centres, but new light rail and regeneration is coming.
Nelson Bay is one of the lovelier spots in Australia IMHO and its only 2 hours to Sydney if you need big city life or events.
If you love clubbing then Newcastle is not the place for you but there are heaps of fabulous bars and restaurants.
I didn't know anything about Newcastle but feel very blessed to have landed here.
Even winter is great as we get the migrating whales which are just glorious to see.
