Cairns is also well covered on Google Street View but don't rely on it or Google Earth other than to get a rough feel of the surrounds and terrain. Seeing is believing.

Careful with SEEK.com too.
It has a growing reputation of advertising ficticious jobs placed by employment agencies just to get peoples CVs on their books for later use.

This is a more reliable one http://www.jobs.careerone.com.au/js.php

The Woolshed pub was excellent.

when I was there one of the beaches near the centre of Cairns had been dredged away (or so i was told) to allow the many boats to take people off scuba diving/snorkelling.

Did you win the wet T-Shirt contest in the Woolshed ? :D

Don't know if there's some confusion here with someone telling you the history ?
The main area of central Cairns (Trinity Bay) did have sandy beaches many years ago but they were ruined during the 2nd world war, by the Americans who dredged the river to get their ships in.
The mangrove mud was dumped into Trinity Bay, and washed onto the once white sandy beaches.
The continuation of the dredging keeps the mud flats in place, and the mangravoves have now taken root in the inlet.

Cairns beaches are between 5 - 30 minutes to the North of Trinity Bay.
Holloways Beach, Yorkeys Knob, Trinity Beach, Kewarra Beach, Clifton Beach, Palm Cove and Ellis Beach.
