A few of you have mentioned the newbies so I thought that I would start a thread so that they could tell us about their story and why they have decided to emigrate, and where they want to go.

Come on then folks....

Cool idea, well here is my story, not sure if it is going to be a long or short story but here it goes!

Before a few years ago I had not been to Australia or even thought about it. I was at college at the time and knew a few folk from over there and even more people that had been. All of which said that they thought it was the country for me. Anyway, that wasn't the main reason. About five years ago my big brother emigrated out there (married an all Aussie woman and went out that way). He had a difficult time to begin with so I know it isn't all plain sailing. Anyway a couple of years ago I went out to visit him. I had the best time ever, I got on with all the people he introduced me too and in the short time (seven weeks) I was there managed to make myself other friends on my own. I am a very outdoorsy sort of person, I love to do things like surfing, sailing, rock climbing and basically anything that gets me out and about. The main reason that I want to go out there is because I think that Australia can offer me more of that lifestyle along with the laid back attitude, sun and and english speaking community.

I know it will be difficult, not only to be allowed out there but also to leave my family but I really think that I will settle out there. I keep on hearing stories about how remote it is from the rest of the world but the way I see it is that Australia is so diverse that you probably wouldn't need to go outside of it that often if you couldn't afford it. And if you did, NZ isn't a huge distance away and is a very different place. Anyway enough ranting from me, thats my story now lets hear the comments!

As someone else said, I am an Aussie stuck in a Scotsmans body (I think they said Pom's!)

Well, I have a brother living on the Central Coast NSW who has now lived out there for, I think, 9 years (he also married an Aussie girl). We spent a month out there last Christmas. We made a decision to go and look at the real Australia as well has to have a holiday, with a view too joining my brother. We spent time out in the bush, time on the beach; we ate at RSL clubs (and had a gamble or two on the pokies), frequented the odd bottle shop, and got bitten by a white tail spider (ouch). Now, were do I want to go. This is a difficult one as I work in the IT industry. It seems to me that the only options for me are Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane but who cares really, any of them will do me. I have an appointment with an agent a week on Friday, OE Visas in Manchester, and will hopefully be getting the ball rolling. Anyone used these before. Anyway I will stop waffling now as I’m sure I am boring every one. Good luck to you all.

I've got the 'look at the real Australia' planned for next January. In the same sort of boat as you, my brother is living in the Blue Mountains and I am also in IT. Only thing that worries me is that they will close off that form of entry before I get there, can't apply for my points till Sept 2005 But I really want it and believe that if you want something hard enough you will find a way, only got to hope that Australia House thinks the same way now

Hi Si.young

We're currently in the process and are playing the waiting game. We went to a migration show in London last year and OE visas were the most helpful agents (and we talked to a few!), they were prepared to discuss our situation there and then rather than just fobbing us off with a form to fill in.
Anyway the skills got assessed in June and the application was acknowledged in September. Everyone we have dealt with at OE visas has been really helpful and prompt with responses to any queries we may raise.
We are actually attending one of their seminars in Manchester in March.
Our story, just quickly, is that my brother emigrated there with his wife 5 years ago, they too found it hard for the first couple of years. We visited in March 2002 with a view to possible migration and loved it. We have two young children and the way of life seems so much better for them and the socialising often includes them. We are therefore applying for a skilled-australian sponsored visa.
Good luck
Sonia & family

Not long to go then, have you got everything sorted out over here or have you got the sense of impending doom?
