My partner and I are seriously considering moving to Australia and have been avidly reading the posts on these expat forums! There is a lot of great information, thanks! We were going to attend an Emigration fair at York racecourse this month but were wondering if it was actually worth driving the 4 odd hours to get to when there is so much information available online. We're going to be applying through an agency and have already found two names that consistently crop up in this forum. Could anyone please tell me approximately how long the process takes and how much it'll cost? I know these questions have been asked before and although we're thinking there's a two years wait we'd like to have a better idea.

My partner's occupation is on the SOL list and we believe he has enough points to be successful. He will however have to convert his qualifications to the Australian equivalent. Does anyone know if this needs to be done before moving to Australia or is there a time limit after moving to get it done?

Thankfully, my ex-husband will give permission for me to take our daughter out of the country. Will he need to sign anything?

I have a thyroid condition and as far as I can tell it won't necessarily fail us but I will be put on the B list. I am going to see my consultant soon so is there anything I should ask him regarding my condition for medical purposes or will this be done during the official medical anyway?

My partner is a pessimist and I am the opposite so hopefully between us we strike the right balance. To be honest all I’ve worried about are the sharks, snakes and spiders! An Australian friend told me to concentrate on the spiders which wasn't altogether reassuring!

Anyway, from what I've read about those fair's; I think you could find the same info online and through emailing/calling agents.

Thyroid stuff: I'm quite sure the user Bundy has a condition that has to do with her thyroid, check out her posts.

In total it could take 2 years... but maybe usually closer to 1.5? That included collecting info and the skills assesment.

It don't think it matters about the qualifications, as long as he gets through the skills assessement.
He doesn't even have to work in that field once he gets to Oz....
I think most 'convert'(ie do tests etc) their qualifications over there. But I guess this all depends on the field??

Yeah, there are issues with ex husbands, has been discussed lots before. He should sign something, even if it's just so in case he changes his mind later!!!

Snakes, spiders: just educate yourselves (use the search function and look up old threads). You do get used to it, and it varies how bad it is.(can depend on state, or area, or what the garden is like)

Timescales are usually:
- a few months to get skill assessment done, depending on your occupation
- 12 months approx processing time by DIMIA after skill assessment, although this time can vary a bit.

What your partner will have to do to convert his qualifications depends on what his occupation actually is, and possibly on what state you plan to live in. You need to be more specific about what he actually does.

In general your ex-husband husband needs to sign a declaration witnessed by a solicitor giving permission for his child to be granted an Australian migration visa, and to be removed from the UK. A local solicitor should be able to advise on what exact wording is required (and your agent can check it over from a migration point of view) - DIMIA's concern is to see that *local* law is being observed.

On medical issues, sometimes one needs to be up-front with a specialist opinions. Depends on the condition. Something you need to explore in detail with your agent.

As far as I can tell, the info you will find on here will make the 4 hour journey to York fairly pointless - I'm going to it but I'm only 40 mins away (and have a mate there who will get the in ).

Thanks for the information Simone! I can find out as much information as I can on the wildlife out there but once those crawly legs come anywhere near me I'll be on the next flight home! Argghhhh!

Thanks Jeremy. It's good to know I'm on the right track! My partner is an aircraft engineer and has already received a huge pile of imformation regarding his qualifications from Adelaide I believe. It just gets so confusing! I assume at the end of it we'll be experts ;-)
