New Years in Brisbane
Hello all,
I'm off to Aus for the new year and staying in Brisbane until Jan 2nd.
Am travelling with a friend (both guys) in early thirties, looking for some advice on where to stay and where to go for some beers etc NYE.
Do we stay in the city centre or not? Some hotel names would be really good, ones which are semi-central and semi-average priced with good delection of bars/restaurants?
Any help much appreciated.
Thanks.

medina hotel is perfectly placed, it is a nice 15min walk along the riverbank from the city centre, and only a 5 or 10min walk into the valley where there are plenty of bars & restaurants too.
I think it fits your criteria of being "semi central" and "semi average priced".

Re: New Years in Brisbane
upstairs at the exchange (charlotte st in the city) has just been refurbished.
Pig & whistle (eagle street) is a big "english" pub with lots of TVs showing sports and big outdoor areas.
Jade buddha (eagle street pier) is great for a beer or two.
Also, the bars in queen street mall are nice for an afternoon beer or four.
in the valley, there are loads of good places... and some not so good too...

New Years Eve in Brisbane is terrible !! For some reason the pubs are very quiet, quieter than a normal weekend.
I think most people must have parties at home or go to parties.

I totally agree, very disappointing. Nobody makes an effort. Dunno why.

The above story was for last year, but expect similar again this year.

Best one was dancing on the roofs of a circle of 4wd's parked on the beach at Moreton Island with a huge bonfire in the middle and then wading into the bay to watch the fireworks be shot off the boats with the Tangalooma wrecks in the foreground...
