It depends on the area you want to live in. You can buy an older house in an expensive area or buy a new house in a cheaper suburb. Or built a new house( most of the time you have to knock down the old house , which can cost a lot of money) in an expensive suburb.
Remember, some old houses are very expensive because of its historical values , most of them have unique characters and the materials used are solid and rare.

New houses are mostly project homes which are cheaper to built unless it is architect designed house(custom built and designed).
