Native fauna and all that me thinks. They won't necessarily be protected in NZ because they are in Australia though. Williamstown council have a possum collector. My father made enquiries and he got the bit about not allowed to re-locate them more than a certain distance away. To show how specific their territory is, my parents didn't have any possums for the first 15 years they lived in their current house. Three doors down knocked down some trees to build a swimming pool and that is when the possums appeared at their house. The biggest threat to wildlife in Australia (apart from humans) is the 'friendly neighbourhood cat'. A possum is a bit too big for 'moggy' so they concentrate on smaller marsupials and birds.

I've already had to give in to the fact that I will never own a cat in Oz. In Nundle, the catch 'em, drown 'em and skin 'em...only the ferals of course, but they still hate cats. Everyone has dogs - we had one too. Well, we still have him, but he stayed out there because he's a working dog.

Wasn't the grandad that came to stay his father, not hers (they certainly looked similar? :D ) And if he was the daughter's grandad (or Bampi or whatever) then surely the daughter was his too???

A few errors in the film eg Melbourne is the second biggest Greek (not Italian) city in the world, after Athens.
That's not actually what they said. While your statement is true, what they actually said was that Melbourne is the second biggest Italian city outside Italy, meaning there is another one (maybe New York?) that is bigger. While I can't confirm that it is actually true, that's what they said.

i can confirm that it was indeed his father.

[When I was in NZ, touring around on one of the backpacker networks, we spent most days working on our possum count - the number we could mow down.

LOL on long journeys the kids counted how many road kill we passed - don't think we actrually hit any.

still seems weird that they are protected. but probably similar to when we sent a man into our loft in uk to spray against woodworm etc. he came down white as a sheet because he disturbed a protected species of bat and he could be fined hungreds of pounds for each bat killed. We ended up having to wait 6 months before he could return to do the job!

No, I was referring to the fact that it said at the very beginning of the program that the family consisted of the man (whatever his name was), her and HER children - they didn't say THEIR children so this implies the children were from her previous marriage or relationship. That's also why I remarked on them having a wedding ceremony 4 years ago in Melbourne - I didn't think it was retaking their vows but they only got married recently. Him being 6 years in Oz in his 20's would suggest they weren't his children.

I wasn't meaning anything by it because I thought they were really nice and were very loving and caring towards each other. It's just that when they said this I remarked to Mrs OzT - 'here we go again' but it didn't go the same way as the previous programs.

I stand corrected on that last one thanks and I've explained the first in another post.;) I just thought they were referring to that well known quiz question what's the second biggest Greek city in the world? Piraeus? Thessalonika? Nup, I give up. Melbourne???

Does anyone know anything about the supposed IT boom that the producers claimed was happening in Melbourne, or is this a further inaccuracy?

Definitely stg and it was £90K for the house and £70K for the land. Why do you think £90K is expensive for a double storey house with what was it - 4 or 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a couple of living areas etc. You would hear them say that £160K for the house and land package was less than the house they sold in Swansea which was less than half the size?

I agree that £90000 looked a very good price for that property. We have been looking at web sites and can tell you the new build plus land option does look very much cheaper than other property of the same quality no matter which part of Oz you are buying. Try looking at "www.AVJennings.com" for some examples - WOW!.

Does anyone know what sort of things would be considered as extras, eg; would air conditioning come as standard?

The only drawback would be the 12 month wait for the property to be built, but to get your dream home I guess it is worth it.

Hi Lostkiwi

You wouldn't of happened to have noticed what the name of the developer was who was building that fantastic house they viewed - we have trawled the web and cannot come up with their name at all. Absolutely fell in love with the house and around the price range we were looking for so would be interested to know who was building it, to check out their website?

Thanks in advance.

I have two pedigree cats, British Short Hairs, which I am planning to take with me, and quite frankly I am alarmed by your comments, I fail to see how people can like dogs but hate cats, (I am an avid RSPCA member) and am now a little concerned about their welfare - is it really that bad?

cats are not the most popular of animals in aussie that much i know but as long as you keep them indoors they should be ok.

Oh!!

I was watching Life Down Under last week and a family moved to Perth and I noticed she had a cat, so presumed it would be okay. You don't happen to know why they are hated so much.

Karen

when we were there my mrs uncle was telling us why he killed any cat he seen on site, basically it boils down to him liking animals and cats kill animals so therefore he kills cats.

simple as that.

sorry if it sounds harsh, i am a cat person myself but would never think about taking a cat to aussie, although i'm sure you would get different advice from somebody who has a cat there.

it's up to you at the end of the day.

Thanks WBB for your advice not happy with the thinking but respect your comments - can't see the reckoning on that as all animals kill, quoting from the Lion King 'the circle of life' - every animal hunts.

By the way, thank you for your Criminal query much appreciated. Just out of curiousity when was your last conviction - if you don't mind me asking (not meaning you are a regular convictor, as I am not, a respectable mother of two - working as a PA to a Company Director, just pulled the short straw on that one).
