Yes we had one property which did not have a washer dryer, just a huge big old sink in a outhouse, but it had space for the washer/dryer as well.

Yep, the Hills is a long way from the CBD. But it's horses for courses. With children, there are worse place you could choose.
We're in Thornleigh (currently! Have lived in this area - Normanhurst/Hornsby) for the past three years or so, since making the move from the inner west. We choose here rather than the Hills proper (more towards Castle Hill) as it's on the train line to MQ. I'm at the uni there and my husband works for one of the companies based on campus: it's about a 15-minute train journey to work/uni and (more importantly!) completely bypasses both the carparks that are the M2 and Pennant Hills Road - Mr GG does not commute well. We're happily settled here as there are good playgroups, daycare centres, schools, etc. It is a longer drive to the city, but it's hardly epic! And it's reasonably close to the northern beaches and even the central coast.
Memorable is for holiday makers. Lifestyle is what you're after.

I didn't say you had to PROVIDE a washing machine/dryer, just clothes washing facilities, could just be a utility sink OR communal washer. In VIC it is part of the Minimum Standards for Rental Accommodation but not sure it is in NSW, although I vaguely recall seeing it somewhere.
