No, you're living in Dullsville. Suburbs vary a lot in terms of knowing your neighbours. Neighbours with dogs tend to know each other; same if you have children. In areas where there's a lot of households where both adults work full-time, it can seem like a ghost-town. Sometimes it's how the suburb has been designed and how walk-able it is. If people have to drive to a shop just to get a paper or pint of milk, it changes how a community works. If you need to find out what's happening locally, you can find out about local groups to join up with for weekend activities. All sorts of hobby things going on out there.

We talk to our neighbours - they give us their chooks eggs and the neighbours opposite have invited us over for coffee/wine and down the road, I often catch up with the guy that lives there for a beer - we have known him since we moved in 3 years ago.

Luck of the draw I reckon but we have lovely neighbours.

Vampireville. We are friendly with all our neighbours and get on well. We socialise with some of them, and consider some to be good friends.

Where I live is almost semi-rural, and on outside looks very quiet.

i live in an apartment in Balmain, Sydney, and despite some extremely basic conversation about the idiosyncrasies of the elevator (it can only handle one button press at a time), no one seems to talk to or know anyone else.

I live in an apartment too. The only time my neighbours have spoken to me is to tell me to keep the noise down!
I spoke back to them but I shan't repeat what I said on here

I live in a suburban street in Coogee, in Sydney. I know all our immediate neighbours - and very nice they are too. We are all perfectly civilised. Chat when passing. Get together for drinks and other social occasions. Have their keys for emergencies when they're away etc etc.

We are all families with children of varying ages who are living here for the long term. No transients or people just passing through. The type of area you live in will make a difference to how neighbourly your neighbours are..

We get on with all our immediate neighbours but don't see them very often. They are all different regardless of where you live.

I live in a house in Balmain and seem to know most of the neighbourhood. I'm always stopping for a chat whilst out for a walk. The dog has helped as she wants to say hello to everyone but even before we got her we knew all our neighbours to stop for a chat on the street

I get a real sense of community around the Balmain/Rozelle area, especially in the old back picturesque streets (except maybe for the multi millionaires rowe on the way to the ferry in Birchgrove. I dont reckon they speak!). It really is like a little village that just happens to have a hulking great city skyline in view.

But unfortunately that sense of community and socialising seems to be completely lost in the appartments I've lived in. A transient rental population are probably the cause. Though I have noticed more recently that (how do I say this politely) language barriers may be becoming more of an issue...ahem.

I live in the same suburb as Deb68 but have a completely different experience. We know most of our neighbpours and socialise with quite a few of them. No, we don't have small children and they don't have dogs. We're all different ages and stages in our lives, but we find our neighbours really great.

No shit drivers on our street, none of them seems to be deaf, and why anyone would expect that it would be similar to England I don't know. It's Australia.

We've been here almost a year now (suburb next to Deb68) & the neighbour on one side of us says hello but no more than that & the guy across the road said hello the other morning as I was going out but his wife (I assume wife) completely blanks me. As for the neighbours on the other side I have no idea what they even look like. I know the kids go to the same school as my 2 but that's it.

We are easy walking distance from the shops & school but that doesn't seem to have any bearing on seeing the neighbours out & about.
