We arrive In Perth on the 1st September and have a 3 week holiday let which has no phone line. Can anyone suggest the best or/and cheapest method of getting connected to internet/broadband/dialup with our laptop from this property.

What about wi-fi?

3g card from vodaphone etc.... Be prepared for 24 month contracts etc. Internet isn't cheap here. Even with phone lines, you pay phone install, internet install, contract fees, exit fees.....

The Bloke uses a wireless connection with a widget-thingy from 3 mobile - it you can get that coverage over there, thats your answer I don't know the tehcnical names (as you'll have guessed!) but he has a widget about mouse sized that plugs into the laptop and picks up the internet wirelessly.

We use this in the uk - its called a dongle and cost about £50 from the 3 shop, you load it with credit like a pay as you go phone and just plug into you pc and log on to the net. We pay £15/3gig download which is about 1month use for us adn connection speed is good. The guy in the 3 shop said this is also available in oz and we will just need to change the sim card, just call into the 3 shop to sort.

Is it better to get the dongle here in the UK rather than in OZ then.

Your can get mobile wifi, which gives you access anywhere in Australia so they say!

Have a look at the vodafone website there will probably be some info on there. We weren't interested so didn't look into it in detail - it could be expensive hough.

Well they have just reduced the price here from £99 to £49 for the modem with no contract. but if you signup for 24 months in Oz they are now doing $39 for 6Gb and it appears a free modem so that is cheaper than here. Before you pay out lots of money for a dongle and a contract .... why not check out where the nearest internet cafe is?

When we first arrived, the internet cafe was two buildings along. Very easy and much cheaper than the mobile wi-fi option.

I use the 3g on the Gold Coast. I bought the USB "Internet Key" outright which cost around $ 250 ish. I am not tied into a contract and can cancel anytime. I use the 6gig plan which is around $49 a month.

WARNING - Do not go over your allocated gigage as you will be charged hefty per mb as I was. The wife made the mistake of leaving it on overnight with her torrent running .... $430 bill !!!! .. All for Coronation Street :curse:

After making a fuss with them I got the bill cut in half !

Internet coverage, speed and costing here is in the dark ages ... unless you live in the the big cities !

The 3g key is the quick solution. Vodaphone and Telstra do similar plans etc.
