Need a hug... warning...a "personal" girly thread
 

Hi girls
I've had a bit of a rough few weeks and could do with getting something off me chest (bit of a pun there).
When ole Kylie was in the news with her breast cancer scare I was quietly pooping myself and have just got the results back from a series of mammograms - I was called back for more and have been expecting the worse but trying to be positive all at the same time.
Well, I have to go for a "stereotactic core" biopsy soon, which freaks me out a bit (not a pleasant experience) but the worse forms of cancer are ruled out (mega phew!) and it could just be fibrocystic disease.
I feel like I'm through the worst, its not fun worrying about your kids' futures, but I could really do with some cyber hugs.
Make sure you check your boobs girls and report any suspicious changes or pain (this was my case) and don't pay the slightest bit of attention if they start moaning about you "doing a Kylie"; I had a bit of this attitude from the ultrasound person but just ignored it lol.
Oh, and get that medical cover... we have been putting this off unintentionally as we have just been so busy with hubby working the past 3 months on nightshift. Thankfully he has finished that contract so is around to support me and the family. Medicare has covered all my mammograms etc. and I have only paid for the initial doctors consultation, so I'm impressed so far with the Aussie system, but it would be a bit more reassuring to go private... we will for any future conditions.

What a horrible thing to go through and it really annoys me that anyone would get attitude like you did from the ultrasound person :mad:

Thanks guys, I really don't know what else to say but I feel its a bit therapeutic getting this out of my system, have been bottling it up for a while and still dithering about whether to tell my parents, they stress about everything so maybe not yet.

I'd also like to reiterate the breast checking, people think it only happens to old people and it just isn't true
I was just 17 when I had to have a lump removed, I was lucky it wasn;t cancer, I cant remember what it was called apparently if left it could have turned cancerous :confused:

Same goes for Smear tests and if any blokes dared enter this thread keep an eye on them balls of yours too.

Larissa, at least you have had the treatment promptly to find out what was going on.

This has shaken you up badly and I can imagine the 'what ifs' are going through your head.

They wont give me a mammogram in the UK as Im 37, I have asked and they said there is no point which is not reassuring at all.

But as for you, buy yourself the biggest bunch of flowers, treat yourself and thank God you are going to be OK.

Life is so unpredictable and can be snatched away at any time.

Your time is not now.

Enjoy your life.

You must be feeling bloody awful, if its any consolation to you, far better here than in the uk. I found a lump when we were still there and had to wait 3 months for a hospital appointment, was told by an incompetent ape that he thought it was a cyst, go away and come back in 6 months, did so and same result. Came here when i was 6 months pregnant and the first thing they did was a breast exam (OK may have been the 2nd) next thing i know I'm with a specialist and having an ultrasound, they were happy that it was a cyst but were so much more thorough than the UK doc, now i go every year and have an ultrasound..... just to be sure..... i have a big family history so it is a worry.

I know how you feel, completely ridiculous thoughts going through your head, mainly about the family, stop it now ;) it will be fine, you are in the best place for it.

I'm not a huggy person but......well here you go <<<<<hug>>>>> there :D

big, big, BIG hugs to you. I was in a similar boat a few weeks ago - found a lump, had a mammogram... lots of "tutting" need to come back for u/s and biopsy.... luckily could access private care here in UK so only had to wait a week for each appointment, but as you know, each day is the longest ever. I was one of the lucky ones but it brought me up short, and put me in contact with those for whom the lottery tipped the other way... big lessons I learned were to look at my kids and really SEE them at least once a day, laugh at least twice, and check, check, check again.... lumps, thickenings anything!

Professional Princess - just for your info, I'm lucky because my husband's (Aussie) company has recently reluctantly agreed to cover private health care for me and the rest of the family. When I rang up the hospital, they said the 40+'s could self-refer and those below needed a doc's letter but should get one if there was anything suspect. The private mammo cost about £120.00 - not cheap, I know, but worth it for the peace of mind.... being told to go away and see if the suspicious area gets any bigger is the way to madness for a woman with half a brain and access to the internet. Incidentally, my advice - STAY AWAY FROM THOSE SEARCH ENGINES AND DIAGNOSTIC WEBSITES.... I "knew" I had stage 3 cancer with significant node involvement - in fact, I had swollen glands and scar tissue from breast feeding!
