Default Need help on work in Australia

Hi everyone.
I'm from England but currently working and living in New Zealand and have been doing so for just under 1 year now.
I am going to be moving on to Australia in August to live and work.
I am a qualified carpenter and that is the work I'll be doing.
My options are either Melbourne or Perth.
I have found quite a lot of work for my trade in Melbourne but Perth seems to be a better place for me to live.
I'm just wondering does anyone know if there is much Carpentry/building work in Perth or is there more in Melbourne?

Thanks in advance.

What visa do you have? It may determine where you can go.

Well the Victorian economy is currently stronger than the WA one and building work is generally something you will see in a stronger economy.

You also seem to have answered your own question to an extent in that you have noted more opportunity in Melbourne, which would be consistent with the economies.

So you are not moving to Australia, you are going on holiday. Why don't you travel around, pick work here and there as you explore the country.

Why would you consider Perth to be a better place to live? If I were under 30 and coming over for a year and not travelling I'd go for Melbourne, way more to do and see.

+1. Well kind of, as I dislike Melbourne personally, but I would definitely do east coast not west coast for the variety and ease of getting around to explore.

This year so far we have had 2 couples staying in our accommodation who have relocated from Perth due to lack of work there, and I have an inquiry from a third couple. Never had this happen in previous years, so I'm guessing work in Perth is drying up a lot.

Perth hitting the skids big time. Why would anyone consider seeking out work here under the present circumstances? Better head to where the chances are greater.

I think careful consideration needs to apply to Victoria too. Has had a massive influx of migrants from interstate especially, and overseas, many are finding jobs not that easy to get.

VERY competitive job market.

If I were on a WHV I'd be planning my extensive trip around the whole country, not just looking for work in one place. Ho hum!

So True. My company laid of around 80 people in Melbourne earlier this year. Different industry though, but as mentioned job market here is very tough at the moment but I suspect it all depends on what you do, who you know and get a little bit of luck.

Since you are coming over on a WHV, you may find it difficult to find work in your field as you can only work at one place for a certain period of time. It may be different in your line of work. Then again, thinking about it, the number of building sites I see with a 5/10km radius around me, might be quite easy.
I assume you have your own tools.

Are you coming over with the intention of trying to get PR or just staying for the year, with possibility of extend to two, if you go and do some fruit picking or the like?
