Hi,
I'm not in Melbourne, but there are plenty of people who live in Melbourne on here who can help you with specific questions about the areas and such.

Your question is bit like "how long is a piece of string" regarding "cost of living" and such It depends on your job, depends on how many mouths you have to feed, depends on what area you are looking at in Melbourne for house prices etc etc. It also depends on your lifestyle, do you eat out a lot, are you a party animal ? Do you need this and that - Do you want a simple life etc etc, if you get my drift. Cost of living is down to the indvidual for a lot of things.

If you go to the top of the page, and press advanced search; Type in the word Melbourne in keyword search , press the search "titles only" otherwise you will have too many results if you search the whole messages. Press search in Australia forum - you will have pages and pages of results/posts about Melbourne for you to read.
That should get you started, or may give you some idea about certain things.

Check out the link below. Don't know anything about Melbourne myself, but you may find what you are looking for on this site.

Hi Mate,
I think Melbournes a great city. General cost of living is pretty much the same as other Australian State Capitals. Eating out is a bargain $40 for a meal for two (in the right places !!). Weather is around the 22c mark at the moment but gonna get a bit colder in the next couple of weeks. When do you get here ??
Cheers

Do a search on here theres tonnes of stuff about Melbourne.

I love living here. I am pretty central to most things 20 mins beaches, 20 mins Dandenong ranges an hour and a half to the snow and 45 mins ish to the city. Theres always heaps to do for couples and families. IMO the weather is great and i really don't get people who go on about needing 30 degs everyday to enjoy a lifestyle The climate suits what we like to do and i don't like to get third degree burns or die of dehydration doing it!! But its horses for courses.

At the end of the day its a big island, if you don't like on part of it theres plenty more bits to try

Are they sorting out a visa? If so, ask what kind of visa - if it's only a temporary visa and not a permanent one you've got a lot of thinking/negotiating to do.

The following is therefore essential reading:
http://britishexpats.com/forum/showthread.php?t=266447

Why not go for a permanent visa instead, either general skilled or employer nominated?
