Default Need advise:Which passports to use and when?

Dear all,

I wonder if some of you have travelled using two passports or dual nationality. Could you share with me with passport to show and when to show?
Currently I have Australian visa on one passport, and NZ visa in other passport. I was told that is totally legal (thanks to JAJ)

If you could advise me with your experiences?

For example if I present only passport with NZ visa to airline check in Sydney Inlt' Airport, will they ask where is my Australian visa in that passport? (Because my australian visa is in my other passport)

Other, If I present only my passport with Aussie Visa to Immigration officer at Sydney airport, will the officer ask me where I want to go (and when I say to NZ, they will ask), where is your NZ visa?

Rather complicated, but I really need your help.

Thanks.

Pam

I'd advise you only travel with one and be sure to use the same one on entry and exit
to the country. I know of someone with dual Irish and American nationality who got
asked some very hard questions when the immigration officer spotted he had two
passports in his bag. In the end he let him go but a 1 hour delay while a supervisor
is called isnt something you want after a long fight

Perfectly I have had 2 passports in the past, one with Israeli stamps in it and the
other those of Arab countries.

<Understatement Mode On> Mixing them up could cause some problems
<Understatement Mode Off>

If you are visiting Australia as a tourist you dont get a visa stamped in your
passport but get a an electronic travel authority , Be VERY sure you present the
passport who's details you put on the visa /ET request

Thanks Keith for your information.
But, have you encountered any difficulties before? Have you travel to NZ and Aus using those passports?

Still curious, what is your case when you visit Israel and Arab countries? Did the Arab countries ask your EXIT stamp from your last departure?

Rather than get perhaps unreliable information on this site, why not call the
Australian embassy/consulate and find out for sure! You say that don't want any
difficulties so why not find out from those who really do know.

My husband was told very firmly by Aussie immigration to exit AND enter Aust on his
Aussie passport (their computer knows all) otherwise it upsets their stats. What he
does outside Aust is none of their business so he generally uses his NZ passport as
it often gets more favourably visa status.

Immigrant Control at the country you're leaving are not interested in whether you
have a Visa for your next country. Your airline is, because they are the one that
gets fined and have to carry you back if you don't have a valid Visa.

Assume you are departing Australia for New Zealand.

Australian Immigration may want to see the passport with your Australian Visa.
Whereas the airline will want to see your New Zealand Visa.

I would suggest that you show your passport with your New Zealand Visa when checking
in with the airline and the passport with your Australian Visa when going through
Customs and Immigration.

When you arrive in New Zealand simply use the passport with that Visa to enter and
exit the country.

You are less likely to have problems showing both each time and pointing out which is
the right one than you would in, for example, the US. I have in the past had two
passports and been in situations like yours. Holding more than one passport is far
from unusual in either Australia and New Zealand, since a lot of the citizens of both
countries do qualify for dual nationality and neither have a restriction on it. I've
been queried on it elsewhere (and in the US on one occasion they actually checked
with the UK and NZ authorities that it was actually allowed) but never had a problem
in Australasia.

Past experiences are probably no longer vaild since September 11. Both
Australai and NZ are VERY fussy about passports and visas, and so are the
airlines as they get large fines if they bring in an illegal immigrant or
someone who suddenly claims for asylum when they get off the plane.
