Well that sucks! No idea about cost, they don't seem to want private individuals at all and the info pages felt like going round and round in circles but no mention of money. Pooheads!

Indeed Interesting gamble by them as a closed shop could easily lead to it's demise.

I sent 2 enquiries - one as an SME and one as an educator (I'm an autodidact ) We'll see what they say.

I've often wondered how they could possibly justify updating their maps as regularly as they do without charging. Whilst the quality is excellent and way better than Google, Google is more than acceptable for most customers I'd have thought, especially as Google do do the street labelling way better. Can't imagine that many businesses actually need uptodate and quality maps as provided by Nearmaps.

from what I read alsewhere, they made a loss of $10mill last year, office has moved to Sydney and CEO has changed.

I read that over 400,000 individuals/organisations had free access. Obviously the police were using them for their work as well.

There must be another way to make profit, eg advertising on their websites, limited access, eg 1hr a day or 50 addresses or whatever instead of completely taking it off the radar for the ordinary folks who want to check what there neighbours are doing in their backyard.

We use Nearmap all the time in our business (cross country pipelines) and in the areas covered the detail is infinitely better than Google. We already pay for a licence which allows us to download the photography and use it as the background to route maps etc.

For the Queensland coal seam gas industry (if you want to argue the merits of this please use another thread!) the major players commissioned Nearmap to fly the entire area of the Surat basin, and when locating the pipe network between the wells the quality of definition is essential.

So I can think of plenty of businesses who will be happy to pay to get that quality of image updated regularly.
