Nation's 'worst' police force riddled with corruption
By Kathryn Shine and Roger Martin
March 03, 2004
SIGNIFICANT, sustained corruption has infected the West Australian police service for the past 20 years, a royal commission concluded yesterday in a damning report that calls for a complete transformation of the "mediocre" force.
Commissioner Geoffrey Kennedy denounced the West Australian force as the nation's poorest performer, blaming a lack of leadership and internal scrutiny for corrupt behaviour that included verballing witnesses, perjury, forgery and stealing.
After hearings spanning two years, costing $28million and implicating about 500 officers, Commissioner Kennedy found the extent of corruption was similar to that identified in the 1987 Queensland Fitzgerald inquiry and the 1997 NSW Wood inquiry.

It looks like WA is about to go through what NSW went through in the late eighties.

Dozens of 'corrupt' police face the sack
By Roger Martin and Paige Taylor
March 04, 2004
DOZENS of police face possible dismissal from the West Australian force as investigators check evidence of wrongdoing compiled by the royal commission into the service.
Police Commissioner Barry Matthews said yesterday that investigators had gathered a "pile of cases" involving alleged corruption or misconduct by serving officers.
Mr Matthews said investigators had been waiting for the findings of the royal commission to be made public before taking action.
"I would anticipate there will be a number of reports shortly coming to me," he said.
In his report tabled yesterday, royal commissioner Geoffrey Kennedy said he had initiated inquiries into 121 officers, 73 of whom were still in the service. The officers will be, or have already been, the subject of inquiries by a royal commission team.

If this was the UK there would be all sorts of resignations, heads rolling, prosecutions etc...
Over here there seems to have been a collective shrugging of the shoulders.

There is a a report indicating how relatively corrupt countries are.
Oz shows up as not very corrupt....I wonder how much they had to pay for that position
