Default National Sporting Allegiances?

With the olympics almost upon us I thought I'd ask you guys who you'll be supporting? It's been an issue for debate in our house in the past (whether people who move to another country should support that country's national team) - broadly speaking I think they should but my husband has admitted that he'd find it hard to do when England play Australia at Rugby Union - he's a massive fan

So, as we don't have our visas yet and we're still in the UK I'm going to support both GB and Australia and have the best of both worlds. Not a huge hardship really as the Ozzies normally bag themselves a fairly respectable medal haul!

It's funny cos a lot of Poms would cheer the Aussies as a second team (if GB aren't involved). But you'd never find an Aussie returning the favour!!

I reckon that would be me. Happy to support Australia, except against England.

I always go for Australia, unless they are playing England. Then it's England.

I never support Australia . Australia are very bad winners and very bad losers. I don't know which is worse... bad winners or bad losers.

Hiddenpaw is right, the majority of Aussies here never support England.. they like to see England lose. If say Ireland, Scotland, Wales or even countries such as France are playing against England - they will support the other nations and not England. England as a team (s) in any sport they love to hate and to see lose. The majority of this nation do not support England

The only exception is when some Aussies follow/support football teams such as Liverpool etc.

Prickly issue. I've always supported the 'local' team whichever town/country/sport is relevant. I suppose you could say that I'm not much of a supporter then if I change my allegiance whenever I move.
So I would support the Aussies except for the facts put by Ceri. The guys in the office had a great time when England had a recent run of bad luck in rugby, cricket, football etc etc...
Olympics - Come on Great Britain!!

It's got me beat why some you would even think Australians would support England in a sporting situation, unless it was the lesser of two evils.

Give me a good reason why they should. Being a former British colony is not a good reason.

The same reason we wouldn't support Outer Mongolia or Lesotho.

You love to hate England.. can I ask why Australia will support any other team who plays against England.. what have they done to you? I know why we welsh have that attitude.. but Aus has no reason ( considering that hell of a lot white Aussies are English origins) . And don't tell me other wise.. All the folks here I know hate England winning at anything., they will support the other three celtic nations when we play them.. hell they rather see france win when they play England. Is it a case of looking at yourself in a mirror.. too alike.

Who is "you"? Me? I don't give a rat's ass about England. For someone who boohoos about generalisations, you love to spout off a few of your own.

Once again; why should we "return the favour"?

Because of our heritage as a UK vassal?

I'm pretty sure this quote was talking about Aussies in Britain and Brits in Oz.

you as in you Australians.. don't tell me any different. People ( ie Australians)here in Aus will support the devil itself if they beat England. They always support the other team ( even if they have no allegiance to the other countries team who are playing against England)... ie any country who plays against England they will support to win against England... Their support for other countries who play against England is support for wanting anyone but England to win. There is no rhyme or reason for supporting any country who plays against England for the sake of it.. but that is what happens here.

The majority of Australians here hate to see England win at anything. They will always support another country - even if it's bin laden himself.

Don't tell me otherwise.. this country I'm living in hates to see England win at any sport and will support the devil itself if he beats an English team.. they go out of their way to support any other nations teams which plays against England - they like to see England lose full stop

I just wondered why Australians are like this.. what is the reason for it? Why do the majority of Australians support anyone who is playing against England? .. what is the reason. Hence my mirror quote. ( too alike).or maybe you ( as in Australians) need to prove something.. ie put another country down .. thou do protest too much as the saying goes

Cheers

I sometimes wonder if I'm in a different Australia when I read your posts
Some 3rd and 4th generation aussies are fiercely proud of their British ancestry I guess it must be the people that we choose to socialise with
