Default National service

During a family meal last night my Step Dad stated that National service is still compulsory in Australia. After nearly two years on this forum i have never read any threads about it. Just tried doing a search too but nothing !!!

Can anyone tell me whether my Step Dad is right or not

This is the proof that your Step-Dad's path to enlightenment is strewn with the droppings of many a bovine creature...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conscription_in_Australia

"Conscription ended as one of the first acts of the newly elected Whitlam Labor Government in late December 1972."
