Question National insurance payments

I know you can get all of the tax you have paid with in a tax year refunded before you emigrate, so long as you claim it before the end of the tax year, but does anyone know if you get any national insurance payments back.
Just interested to know if you do or not.
Thanks Jackie

You don't get your national insurance payments back . You also don't get "all of the tax you have paid with in a tax year refunded before you emigrate", just the bit that you overpaid on the PAYE system. The earlier in the tax year you leave, the bigger the overpayment.

(Also: if you have car/house contents/buildings insurance make sure you contact the companies as you usually get a refund on that.)

Would you advise continuing to contribute NI payments when emigrating to OZ?

I have heard you can continue to pay NI payments but do not know how to arrange this or if it is beneficial to do this.

It's definitely worthwhile. Instead of paying Class 3 (£7.40 a week) you can pay Class 2 (£2.10) a week. So, for the cost of a latte a week you get a full UK pension - won't be enough to retire on of course, but a very welcome boost to your incomings at retirement age.

2.10 a week sounds like a bit of a rip off as annually, that would be more than the current pension rate. Why not invest the money in oz for your retirement in oz.

Agree completely but it would also depend on your age when you leave the UK. If you were only in your 20s it might not be worth doing. As always it's a gamble cos you don't know what future governments might do with the UK state pension. Knowing my luck they'll decide to means test it right before I'm due.

You can take the chance of paying contributions to the UK when you get to Australia, but I personally don't think that when I retire there will be a pension, especially for people who live in another country. I will be making provisions for retirement in Australia
