Thumbs down My first week at work

Well crap doesn't cover it!

The job is fine but the boss is messing me about left, right and centre.

I first contacted her when I saw an ad in the paper, she said it was casual work so I told her that was no good. She kept my details anyway. Then I get a phonecall from her saying she could offer me 5 days permanent after Christmas but 4 days permanent starting in a fortnght...fantastic, just what I was after.
So off I go to work. Payday comes and she decides that I'm casual after all!!

The reason I need permanent work is so we can get a mortgage. We're one of those families who have emigrated skint but have relatives to stay with until we're sorted.

Now, I know most jobs start you off as casual, see how you go then make you permanent but I don't believe she'll do this as all the other girls work casual for her.

So I postponed job hunting thinking I'd got a permanent job, turns out I haven't so I'm going to start looking again.

I would just walk out, but coming out here skint means every cent helps, so I'm going to stick with it then as I'm only casual I don't have to give notice so I think as soon as another job comes along I'm straight out of there.

Peed off or what

If you are 'casual' shouldn't you be on a higher wage than a perm?

I agree it is hard to get Perm work here sometimes but make sure if you are casual you are being paid more at the moment otherwise you are being taken for a ride. It's REALLY hard to get a jpb now until at least Feb as the whole country shuts down on hiring over the Summer Holiday break as the only people who can make decisions on hiring are on Annual leave. I'd stick at it for now as it's always easier to get a job when you are in a role already. At least it's experience in this country.

On the positive front my hubby was offered a perm job at the firm he worked for once he stated he was looking for a perm position but he had prooved himself on a Contracting basis first.

I applied for a job and was offered Casual. I stated that it was a Perm part-time position I would eventually like to get and stated that I would still be looking for one whilst working Casual for them. They phoned me up the next day and offered me a Perm as 'we would have to be pretty stupid to let someone walk away with the skills you have had in th UK'. Been there 2 months and they have been fantastic.

What field of work are you looking at?

Hi Marie,

I know exactly what you mean and that is a lot of the reasons I gave up on the Hairdressing, maybe 1 in 100 jobs is permanent here, everyone I know and all my friends are casual, employers just don't want the hassle of the sick and holiday pay. You should be getting paid at a higher rate as casual so just make sure you are. Some banks will give you a morgage as a casual especially if they see money going into the account every week and if you manage to save some, so don't give up on getting a morgage. Keep job hunting something will turn up.

Hi and thanks for the replies, I am getting paid the higher rate but to be honest I'd rather have less money but have a permanent position. We've spoke to a few banks about mortgages whilst in casual work and the rule seems to be that if you're casual you have to of been working for the same company for atleast 6 months! Which is alright but we'd rather not wait that long as we live with relatives at the mo but that can't go on forever and I really don't want to have to rent somewhere as that's our wages down the drain or atleast it gives us less money to save. Some banks will accept you working in casual work if you have a deposit for a mortgage- which we don't
A couple of big banks did say to us if I got a permanent position they'd give us a mortgage straight away as I've done the same job in the UK for the last 9 years, so they'd see it as a secure job. This however only applies to me and not my hubby as he can't do his old job here and get a mortgage other than an investment mortgage as he was a 'live in' caretaker.
The other thing is, if I had regular hours that I knew I'd get paid for it would be different but I worked 30 hours last week and this week I'm down on those hours already and only an achievable 17 hours left to go. My boss knows I need a regular 32 hours to make it worth it yet she just keeps telling me to go home early. I'll probably of doe around 26 by the time this week is over.
Quite a few hairdressing jobs I've seen advertised have been casual for frst 3 months then permanent, which would be loads better as it means in 3 months I can go get a mortgage as I'd have my first permanent pay slip.
We were hoping I'd get a permanent job leaving the hubby to work casual hours but now I think he may have to go and find a permanent job which unfortunately for him is going to be really difficult as he has no quaifications (other than security) although he does electrics/plumbing/joinery etc..he can't get a license out here without his Uk qualifications which he doesn't have, and the lack of cash means we can't send him for oz training. He did have a permanent job but fell off a ladder, twisted his ankle and as he'd only been there a couple of weeks they had to let him go.
Roll on Saturday when the job paper is out!! and hope I can stick with this job until something else does come along, cos I'm ready for jacking it in already.

Marie,

This link is a company in Southport that specialises in Expat home loan (non-conforming). I've met the owner Jason on a few social occasions and he's a decent bloke, so it may be worth a go. That said, go into all these things with your eyes wide open.

just a quick one. given that house prices are on the slide (albeit not a big slide) you are actually better off renting at the moment. if you put the difference between rent and a home loan (which for me is around $250/wk) away in a good savings account, then in 6 months you'll have $6000 to add to your deposit. if you were to buy a house now and pay, say, $500/wk to your mortgage, you would pay off less than $6000 principle, and as the house will not have gained any capital, you will be worse off.

trust me, i did a lot of investigation into this, and it's why i'm happy to rent at the moment. once the market takes off again (12-18 months apparently), then it will make sense to buy.

There's no way in the world hubby will rent, and although I'm nt stoked on the idea I would consider it. We need to be in our own place within the next 6 months as friends of ours emigrate next year and will be staying with the MIL, then hubbys cousin and hubby are due to emigrate aswell as soon as there visa comes through, they too will be staying here. So we've got to get out of here to let the next lot of expats move in.

Diddy, gonna take a look at the company you recommend when hubby returns from the sunshine coast tomorrow so thanks for that.

Getting a mortage on casual or contract labour or even subcontactor should not be a problem in australia. Because thats the way most people in aus are employed. Perm jobs will get even harder to find with workplace reform.

All of the subbies we use for example have mortages but the work will always be week to week. If you read through past threads many people even like teachers, nurses, are employed on a casual if and when we need you basis.

One thing tho if your claiming family benefits and your income changes week to week dont underestimate it because you then get a bill to pay it back at end of tax year.
