Must do holiday things to do in Melbourne???

Hi Guys

We are going to see some rellies in Melbourne in early December.

We are trying to figure out how many days we want to go for (we are flying from QLD). What are the must do things in Melbourne?

We like going to Pubs/bars and enjoy live rock music, plus one of our rellies is taking us to a horse racing day and we will be going to the casino.

Any recommendations about Melbourne very welcome.

Thanks in advance.

There is a huge amount you can do, and as its December make sure you take in Crown Casino Christmas display, Myer windows, the arcades, Southbank.
Also Eureka Tower, trams, the myriad of eateries, Queen Vic Market and of course the Zoo, botanical gardens, boat ride up the Yarra...

Go to see a show in the theatre - there are plenty of good shows that never make it to Brisbane.

Take plenty of money for the booze :( Cost me $13.50 for a pint of cider in one of the pubs last month :thumbdown:

There is a free visitor shuttle bus which you can catch and takes you around the sites. I enjoyed that when I visited.

Also Great Ocean Road trip (not sure how much time you have) You can do it in one (long) day, but i went on a tour and did it in two days.

Also, Philip Island Penguins of course. Slightly out of Melbourne but it was my favourite thing.

I guess have a look at the gig guides before you go and see who is playing - there are some amazing venues here and I've been to see tons more rock bands here than I ever saw when I lived in London.

Queen vic sells everything, tat, food, deli, it's great.
Block arcade, royal arcade. In the centre near Myers.

If you like real football 8th December at 5pm (nice and early and could start off a great night) Melbourne Victory v Newcastle Jets, Should be 25K very loud fans at the game.... Probably as good a venue for football atmosphere as you'll get in Aus.... Top it off with a night out in just up the road in Richmond ... Live bands at the Corner hotel...Vietnamese/Asian food, pubs bars and clubs. There is a bowling rink in Richmond as well if you fancy that... Oh and before the match maybe Ikea... not that is a great drawcard.

Other must do's Brunswick St Fitzroy, Lygon St Carlton, and High St Northcote, just for checking out what inner Melbourne is about.

Imax at Melbourne Musuem could kill two birds with one stone.... Museum and Big Movie Screen.... The Zoo isn't too far from there, and then another Iconic Melbourne Strip... Sydney Rd Brunswick.

You must go on the Circle tram as well.... Upstairs at Young and Jacksons is really enjoyable, check out "Chloe" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Young_and_Jackson_Hotel) whilst you there which is across the road from Flinders st station... there is a very high bar in Collins st as well something like the 55th floor with views and prices to match. Some rooftop bars around that CBD area as well.

Make sure you hunt out the CBD arcades and do Hardware lane etc.

Ferry from SouthBank to Williamstown and get the train back... just for another facet of Melbourne.

Melbourne is the kind of place where perhaps you can't list some world-heritage awsome place to see.

Just come down and walk around, having first checked that there is not some show on which you might want to see.:)

Start at one end of Collins, walk up to the other - see - I am easily pleased.
Duck down a laneway.

Try the search facility. There have been a couple of threads in the past year on the subject. One started by me about last September ish time. Loads of suggestions on there.
