The Neighbours tour was pretty good, although perhaps a bit cheesey!

If you like live music, have a look at the website for the Espy in St Kilda. always plenty of up and coming live bands every weekend.
St Kilda is a great place for a night out anyway (or even breakfast the morning after with a big breakfast and bloody mary to get you back on track.) and a beach walk to wake you up.
They have a sunday market in St Kilda as well that's worth visiting if you are in the area.

Heaps of excellent live music venues in Melbourne;
eg. Palais Theatre and Esplanade hotel in St. Kilda
Forum theatre, Hi Fi bar and Palace theatre in central Melbourne. Also some inner urban pubs are well known live music venues with the occasional international act of note, eg. the Corner Hotel in Richmond.
The biggest names are generally at Rod Laver arena or Hi Sense arena (at the Australian tennis open venue), also Festival Hall just to the north west of the city (generally indie, metal and punk bands).
Also check out the Sidney Myer Music bowl which holds some major rock/pop concerts as well.
The biggest names of all generally play at Etihad stadium, examples in recent years include Pearl Jam, AC/DC and U2.
As for other attractions, the Botanic gardens are a must see, also Carlton Gardens and the Royal Exhibition Building (if you are into architecture and history) which is a world heritage listed site.
A walk around central Melbourne will reveal some grand Victorian era architecture, especially on Collins street, Elizabeth street and Bourke street (if you are into that sort of thing), heaps of heritage buildings with 'blue plaques' detailing the history and significance of these buildings. Check out Flinders street station, the Parliament building, Treasury building, former General Post Office, Town Hall, St Pauls and St Patricks Cathedrals, Windsor hotel and the former Manchester Unity building.
Block and Royal arcades are intact Victorian era shopping arcades from the late 1800s and are magnificently decorated inside. They mostly contain upmarket specialty stores.
Cafe culture is huge in Melbourne with no shortage of places to get a decent coffee and cake as well as a world class culinary scene in general. Plenty of good pubs and bars in the city and inner suburbs as well.
Melbourne of course is famous for its sporting events year round, although there is not much on in December (aside from the Boxing day cricket test).
Melbourne has five major theatres hosting live stage performances, i.e. Princess theatre, Athenaeum, Her Majesty's, Comedy Theatre and the Regent Theatre. There is usually something decent on.
About 40km from the city is the Dandenong ranges area which has extensive open gardens, quaint villages with quirky shops and forested hills with areas of temperate rainforest and dominated by one of the world's tallest tree species, i.e. the Mountain Ash eucalyptus. It's possible to get the train there but takes over an hour.
Just a few ideas....

Both WSW and MV will have close to 25K members each this year.... With MV going for 50K within 5 years... Around the time of the 2018 World Cup.
AAMI park to be doubled in size as planned by 2022. Circa 60K
FYI, in case your not aware whats going on in the A league, which you'll be able to watch for the first time on free to air this season, once a week on fridays.

Two guaranteed AAMI Park sell outs in two weeks.... 1st 21st December Melbourne Heart v Melbourne Victory... at least 32K , then the biggest interstate home and away game of the season at AAMI park at least, on the 28th Melbourne Victory v Western Sydney Wanderers.

Quite simply Two big sporting events in December, 'a possible holiday thing to do'.
People travelled from all over Aus for the last "Soccer" match here involving MV, at a 96K attended event.
Plus I blatantly like to promote the A league at every opportunity I get, In the not too distant future the A league final will be a definite major sporting tourist event.
