Question Mt Isa / Townsville (what are they like?)

Hi there,

Just looking into the possabilities of working at Mt Isa in QLD with an option for fly in fly out from Townsville.

Would like some feedback from first hand experience of these two areas.

Don't hold back now! I do want to know the genuine thoughts for the areas concerned. I need to consider job security, health / medical provisions and provisions for family (young) life and development.
Regards

Mt Isa is a mining town in the middle of nowhere, reputed to have the largest Irish Club on planet earth. I heard one could take a tour of one of the local mines which boasted a lift capable of taking two dumptrucks per journey. Serious stuff this mining.
Mt Isa must be THE LARGEST country town in Australia ???

Townsville is probably QLD's largest city after Brisbane (certainly after Brisbane/Gold Coast) ... Magnet Island is about 20 minutes away and is quite idyllic. 300k south (half a day's drive south is the Whitsundays, half a day north Tully/Mission Beach/Dunk Island.

Suggest you check out the Townsville - Mt Isa flight timetables and pricing ... did the journey once or twice myself by bus (a long time ago)

CMEng,

I don't know an awful lot about Mount Isa, but I do know that my wife nearly went there with her ex-husband years ago. And that it's a large enough town to appear on the regional weather maps on the TV, and it's always bloody hot !

Good luck,
Paul.

Question Date of departure

Bit of a loaded question that one.

Basically without the job offer or secure work I will not be going anywhere with my family.

My current lifestyle/job/location are all spot on.
However faced with the opertunity to be in either Oz or NZ I would give serious consideration (as would my wife) to a permanent migration. But and this is the thing... only if I have a secure job in a similar cost of living bracket as present.

Keen to go but not desperate would sum up the current position.

Hense no set relocation date at present.

Don't underestimate how remote Mt Isa is at almost 900km from the coast, that's like driving from Scotland to Cornwall in roasting weather with only a few villages in between.

That's about the same distance as Gold Coast to Sydney.

Mount Isa has a population of about 22,000, it is very isolated and exists only to service the mine. The firm I work for has a branch there, our guys tell me that everything - cars, houses - gets covered in red dust (presumably from the surrounding desert?), it's not pretty but the money can be very good. You are paid well to make up for the perceived shortcomings of living there.
