Moving to Sydney - suburb recommendations

Hello, could anyone recommend some good suburbs in Sydney to live which have a community village feel, good government primary schools, good public transport links (less than 1 hour to city), close to a good hospital and walking distance to shops?
Many thanks in advance!

Lane Cove fits most of that.

Woolhara, Double Bay, Paddington, Balmain, ..... could go on. Plenty fit that requirement.

Many thanks! Have previously lived in Woolhara/Paddington and didn't feel it had a village/community atmosphere but will look into the others. Thanks again!

Ok. More info given. I think they call Gymea in the southern suburbs a village.

I lived in Gymea Bay for a year. ( Ellesworth Rd)No way that's a village, even in the mis-used Oz sense of the word. It's just a strip of shops that run off of President Ave. it's unremarkable in every way and no different to myriad others.

Gymea Bay is nice but hardly any shops and a long, hot and boring walk to Gymea. Lilli Pilli is nice but the other side of the bay. Big tradies club and a bowlo at Gymea, that's about it. Very 'white bread' kind of suburb.

I tend to agree with Triboy. Nice leafy suburban spot to live but definately just a row of shops.

Define your ideals of a village for us?

If a nice stretch of sand is important too then Cronulla has some good schools, a beach-town feel, a train link to the city (1hr), a good hospital in Sutherland, some local shops too, and Westfield Miranda isn't far away at all.

I will throw in something a bit different.

Breakfast Point.

Great area, has a few very nice shops of its own, but walking distance to loads more.

I can certainly recommend Newport or Avalon (Northern Beaches), very laid back vibe, both great beaches. The only downside is they are more like an hour'10 into the CBD, but that's half the charm (a million miles away).....we even have a Hospital (5 mins away) in Mona Vale....when you come to live in Australia, why wouldn't you live by the beach?...North Shore/North Snore is too suburban for my liking...even if they do have the trains, they don't have the beaches....and don't forget we have Pittwater as well...what's not to love!
