There are several checklists of things to do before and after you move in the sticky thread here - http://britishexpats.com/forum/showthread.php?t=345774

If buying a house $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ ready. If renting maybe a tarpaulin or tent.

Don't forget to relax a bit and enjoy your first days here, as well as getting all the important things like bank accounts and health cards done.

Everything commonwealth said. Also:

- Sydney is a sprawling mess of a place and, especially if you don't have a car, it's a good idea to check that wherever you choose to live is serviced by decent public transport. Don't take this for granted - even though they might appear central, some suburbs are serviced by little more than a single bus line. Cityrail.info and Sydneybuses.info are good places to check.

- Sydney's rental and property markets are cutthroat, so if you haven't got a place sorted, steel yourself now. Research tenancy rights with Tenants NSW if renting, and if buying, I'd suggest choosing a solicitor or conveyancer based on trusted recommendations rather than ads or apparently low prices.

- If you're coming over with kids, consider researching the NSW school system to work out where best to enroll them. If you are enrolling them in government schools, the suburb you live in may affect which schools your kids may go to.

- Have fun and take time to explore!
