Moving to Oz and Qualifications
Hi
I'm looking to move to Austalia this year and was wondering if any one could give me some advice on what is the best way to do this.
I was also hoping that someone might be able to tell me if my Teaching Assistant CACHE/NVQ Level2/3 would still be usable in Oz and if so what is it the equivalent of ?

start at http://www.immi.gov.au but do be aware there is not always a visa option for everyone who wants one.

Lauraw - educational qualifications are a state rather than federal matter so you'll have to check with the education departments of whichever state you want to move to.
Some things to bear in mind, however are that the qualification bars that exist in the UK don't always apply here. Its quite arbitrary and varies from industry to industry.
UK tradies with good qualifications and experience, for example, find themselves having to fork out big $s for mickey mouse TAFE courses to practice while academic qualifications are soemtimes treated as vocational in other areas.
Best thing to do is figure out which state you fancy, have a look at their government website, get some contacts for the education dept and ask.
Bear in mind as well though, that some schools, particularly private (and that sector is way bigger than the UK over here) have much more scope to set their own qualification bars.

Teaching assistants arent the same here at all. They are generally very low paid, often casual positions where you need no qualifications beyond a clean police record and a first aid certificate. Such jobs are in high demand from mums who want school hours while their kids are little. Some states are beginning to ask for cert iv in integration if an aide is to work with kids with disabilities (usually autism these days) but generally no qualifications required and the pay reflects this.

If your serious about a teaching career in Australia you really need a Graduate Diploma of Education. With this being a post grad qualification you will need a univeristy degree.
