Default Moving in a month, need some general

So it's all official now. We decided to make Melbourne our home, and we have booked our tickets.

We've been so busy selling the house, getting our stuff shipped, getting out of the house that I haven't had time for anything else. If I manage to get more than 4hrs of sleep it's been a good day.

But there's still a lot more we need to do.

We shipped our stuff Nov 6th and the movers estimate the container should be arriving to Melbourne by Dec18th (they told me to expect at least 2 weeks before everything could clear customs), which is fine, we need time to find a place.

We'll be arriving to Melbourne December 4th.

Can anyone recomend short term stays in Melburne?
How long does it typically take to be able to rent an apartment?
Should I book a short term stay for 3-4-5 weeks?
Is the country completely shut down at the end of December, or would we be able to look for an apartment those days.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Expect more questions on areas to live, schools, etc....

We close for Christmas and new year, so either get something really quickly, or go for a longer let and have a holiday too!

I'd book short term accommodation for at least 4 weeks. It's the main summer holiday season so get something fixed up as soon as you can. It's not as bad as the UK for everything closing down for 10 days at Christmas here. Yes, some businesses do shut up from the middle of Dec for a month but shops and most stuff is open straight after Christmas. I find the emphasis is on summer holidays rather than a Xmas break.

Miami hotel Melbourne is very cheap and has basic rooms for only around $500 a week. If you have more money to spend the quest appartments short term lets are very good. I started in Quest Apartments in St Kilda in 2004 when I arrived.

Hey r11 - remember me? We were waiting for our visas together
I can't believe its' been so fast and your'e already moving, wow! Let us know how things continue to go, and I wish you much success!!

I have the visa but wanting to finish my degree first, which I had started before the visa process. Oh, by the way, how are you taking the move emotionally? Do you feel like you will miss your old home? THat is my greatest fear - my emotional ties
