Beach suburb within 1 hour of Hawthorn? Don't just think south east (too expensive closer in as mentioned, nothing to write home about further out).

I'm biased because it's where I come from but have a look yourself. It's expensive without doubt, particularly on or close to the water with arguably the best views in Melbourne but prices go down rapidly as you move inland or only have partial views. We are lucky to have a place on the waterfront with a view of the city, the bay and the hills beyond that you would pay double or treble for in an inner south/south east suburb. Here's some of my own photos for a flavour:

One day a few years ago when we were out at our place (we live in Scotland most of the year) and we woke up to the Queen Mary 2 berthed opposite at Webb Dock because 2 other cruise ships were in Station Pier
