Moving to Melbourne
Hi
I am moving to Melbourne from London in November. I am 25 and moving on my own. I will be working in the city centre. Any tips on finding somewhere to live? I think I would like to share a flat/ house with people my own age. Any pointers on where to live and how to find a room would be gratefully received. Thank you |

Thank you If you would like a "happening" area close to the city centre with a lot of singles / couples your age I would consider - St Kilda, South Yarra, Prahan, South Melbourne, Carlton, Fitzroy, Southbank and even the city centre itself. For house shares etc try Gumtree or AirBnB perhaps? Good luck with the move - Melbourne is a fantastic vibrant city with lots going on. BB |
Re: Moving to Melbourne
Hi Lucy, I've been here about a month now, so happy to share experienced but am by no means an expert on Melbourne yet! I work in the city too, but have been Living in Port Melbourne. I've seen lots of flat shares available on gumtree and other flat share sites. I'm sure you will find something pretty easily. I came by myself too, so happy to meet up when you arrive if you would like a friendly face. Feel free to PM me on here, or let me know if you'd like to connect on Facebook if that is easier.

Hi Both,
Thank you for the tips - all very helpful. Liz - would be good to meet up. Starting get a bit scared about the big move! Did you opt to live on your own or with others? How has your first month been? Lucy |

Thank you Just wanted to say as a single person you won't have any problems finding somewhere, as someone mentioned previously there are lots of advertisements in Gumtree, etc.. Also in the city I have seen advertisements in people's apartments asking for flat mates, that's an option I suppose. You will love it here I'm sure, :D and you are at a great age to enjoy the best the city has to offer. Be sure to check St Kilda out. We have been here in St Kilda just over a week. It's buzzing here. Loads going on and lots of people your age all having a good time. Lucy and Moo there is also a free tour of Melbourne which I went on yesterday, it's really helped me get a better picture of Melbourne and show me where everything is, places to eat, places to visit and the different areas and what they have to offer. It's worth a shot and not at all boring like some tours. They were a couple of lads in my group who I ended up chatting with, they were in their 20's they enjoyed the tour and said they were glad they did it. The tour is outside the State Library everyday at 10:30 and 2:30. The best of luck to you both. |

Fantastic Molly you've become a Melburnian already, dishing out advice to newbies! Love it!
How are you enjoying the weather? We were at the local beach for fathers day and I was amazed at how many people were swimming this early in the season! Nutters! Must have been English tourists. BB |

BB The weather has been great hasn't it! We drove up to Bells Beach today, there was loads of people in the sea, including my sons. Nutters indeed. I was walking on the front of St Kilda last night and they were people swimming then. I heard this Aussie say ' They must be from Sweden or something. it made me and the hubby chuckle. |

Re: Moving to Melbourne
Hi All,
So St Kilda seems to be coming up a lot. What would the commute be like to the City Centre? Thanks, Lucy |

Re: Moving to Melbourne
St Kilda is around 7.5km from the city centre. It takes me around 20 mins to cycle that journey. I've not walked it but you'd have to be going at a fair pace (running!) to do it in 25 mins. If you take one of the trams along St Kilda Rd, it can take upwards of 15mins. If you take the 96 tram which is mainly not on road, then it is faster.
I work in St Kilda, and attend client meetings in the city. I do this route very often. I also live in Elwood so if you have any questions on the area, feel free to ask. |
