Moving to Melbourne
 

Hi there,

This is my first post to this forum, although I have been browsing for a while and found it very useful.

I will be moving to Melbourne at the end of May this year as my husband is starting a job at the Univeristy of Melbourne so any experiences that people have of moving there would be appreciated. We will actually be coming from the USA, where we have been living for the past 2 years, so the whole 'moving abroad' thing isn't something that we are worried about (although a year of winter isn't the best!)

I'm sure I will have lots of more specific questions, but I just wanted to say hello.

We moved from Edinburgh to Melbourne in April last year, and are loving it.

My husband, 1yr old & myself have to validate before May.

We are planning to make the move for Melbourne as soon as we get a tennant for our house here.

We are planning to move to Melb in the next 12 months also. Have just returned from holiday recce yesterday so if you want anything specific and current I may be able to help. FYI I lived in Melb for many years until mid 90's - so am very familiar with it.

I am from Melbourne, living in Scotland with my (Scottish) wife and we will be returning to live in Melbourne (Williamstown) some time in the future. University of Melbourne is my alma mater and my brother is a lecturer at Monash University (Geography). Good luck on your move and I will be only too happy to answer any of your questions on Melbourne (if I can). Whereabouts will you be living?

It seems such a funky city with loads to do. is the weather as bad as the rest of the ozzies say?

I think Melbourne's a fantastic place. When I was a young wipper-snapper in the early 90's, I spent 7 months of my years working holiday in Melbourne and had a ball, it is a great place to live and work, with lots of beautiful places to visit. I went back to Melbourne with my partner two years ago for a months holiday and still loved it.

I'm not an expert on Melbourne by any means, but from the brief time I've spent there, I've found the weather to be very mixed - hence our decision to live in Brisbane. Although we may well relocate at a later date.

Yeah sounds familiar I must admit. Foods better than the UK though.
I wonder if anyone has done a sponsored Mcathon, big mac at every place probably explode after 300 yards.

I haven't really seen much graffiti in Melbourne, and I've been in and out of town on the train a few times (this is where I see most of it). Melbourne is reknowned for it's rain so it shouldn't really surprise anyone who visits that it does rain there in the winter.

Strange about the food thing being mentioned.

I tend to eat the same here as I did in the UK. The meat is much nicer here though, and the veg at the markets are definitely fresher. I never found a local market that sold veg at a decent price in the UK so it's great to be able to find it here. Supermarket veg seems to be about the same as in the UK.

For some reason (probably the heat) I'm not really that bothered about the chocolate any more (maybe the occasional Cherry Ripe) but I love the variety of breads that are available here (but will be giving that up as of tomrrow as I'm low carbing).

No, I'm none the wiser and hence my post - what is the can of spray paint and perfect your tag. Now in the topic review I see someone else has explained - graffiti. No more or less than anywhere else in this world I've been I would say.
