Moving Furniture to Oz
Hi,
When I get out to Australia I'm keen to have all my furniture shipped out, i.e. wardrobes, couches, tables & chairs. Obviously I know what imigration is like with bringing in wood to the country so would I be likely to get furniture into Australia or should I give it up as a bad job and sell it in the UK. My main concern is having it shipped and imigration kicking it all back and wasting the shipping costs.
Thanks
Stephen

Hi Stephen, you should be fine bringing furniture in so long as it's treated, i.e., not raw wood, doesn't look like you just took a chainswaw to a tree.
We brought a lot of wooden furniture and artefacts we bought in Asia and had no problems whatsoever; some of it is very rustic Indonesian. We did, on the advice of our shippers, leave behind most of our outdoor furniture as we had let it age naturally and they thought we'd have a problem with it. The small set we brought, I cleaned up and re-stained and that got through fine too.
Myself and others have asked numerous questions about what and not what to ship, so if you have a search you should find some useful threads.

We recently moved over and used a company to ship out our stuff. We planned it so that they picked up the stuff we wanted to ship over 8 weeks before our intended arrival date in Sydney so it arrived there or thereabouts when we got here.
One thing from our experience is ship as much over as possible. Even the iron board! Pillows - the lot.. Simply because you will find it is done on container size not the quantity or weight. If you have spare stuff then definatley ship it over. It all costs money to buy over here and invariably it is cheaper to ship all you stuff than to leave some stuff at home only to have to buy it new when you get here. All in all it cost us £3000. One thing we got caught out on is that you need to make sure things are clean when you pack them. They cleaned our bikes cos they had dirt on but in actual fact they were nice and shiney when we got them.
Good luck and hope this helps!
