Moving to Brisbane; any ideas on good suburbs?
hiya,
I have been in Auckland for a good few years now, and have just been made an offer in Brisbane. The company's offices are in South Brisbane, above West End and Highgate Hill.
Do people have any tips on good areas to look to live? We are a couple with no kids, looking for something 2 beds preferably, townhousey or apartmenty. Budget wise I guess around $350 - $400 per week.
Any advice folks?

For $350 - 400 you can rent a nice townhouse east of the City. Wakerley, Gumdale and Wynnum areas (the three are in my order of preference)

thanks for that.
what sort of commuting times are we talking about into the City?
the other half wants to know if there are any nice cottages or similar type dwellings to rent, and nice suburbs for those?

I think it's about 30 mins into the CBD by bus. There's also a train service near Wynnum. Not sure about cottages etc for rent but the townhouse we lived in for 5 months was new and very nice (shared onsite pool) but no good for our three kids.

You could also consider Rosalie Village in Paddington across the river which isn't too far in a car or a bike ride to South Brisbane across the new Go Between bridge. It has some nice little cottages around a restaurant precinct. Check the flood maps though. Paddington is yuppie/pretty/green to west end's grungy so it depends what you prefer.
You could also consider living in the lovely New farm/Teneriffe area as it has a great bus service (city glider) or citycat ferry service to south brisbane for work. It is next to the main nightclub/pub area of Brisbane. It is more expensive though.
Should be some 2 bed apartments within your budget but the stand alone cottages would be more - unless you can find a cheaper 2 bedroom cottage.
As South Brisbane is on the train line you can really look north and south of the city along the train routes that go through the South Brisbane station. You can also look along the southern busway as it goes through South Brisbane as well.
Unless you are looking for an area that you can also afford to buy in later I wouldn't bother going further than say 5km from the city as there really is no need to in Brisbane in your situation.

yes, definitely need to check the flood maps...saying that almost exactly the same houses flooded that have been on the maps since 1974 so not hard to avoid. You already had to check the flood maps when living there so nothing has changed really except the risk has been confirmed and is more in the forefront of peoples minds. A house right in the flood zone that sold around mid sixes just before the flood is back on the market now for 500k+ 2km from the city. Ouch. Sad driving down Vincent St in Auchenflower and seeing so many of the houses still empty.
Was at the Rosalie recovery day yesterday to celebrate the rebirth of rosalie after the floods and great to see the village back in full swing. Only 4 retailers left and 3 of those have been replaced.
