Default Moving back to Sydney from London - salary advice in 2021

After a decade in London, it’s time for me to resettle back in Sydney.

I am luckily getting a transfer back with work (although it’s not really necessary as I’m an Australian citizen and visas are not required) however one of the roadblocks is determining salary in conjunction with cost of living.

I have no idea how expensive Sydney is these days, hence why I need to determine the equivalent quality of life I have in London in Sydney based on salary, in 2021!

I earn 70,000 pounds, with a 20 percent bonus on top. And my current employer is offering 135,000 (with equivalent bonus), however I believe based on the common 2.5 cost of living multiplier I am getting short-changed.

what’s your thoughts on this?

minimum x2. Anything above x2.5 is a bonus.

I worked off this for a London to Sydney move 11 years ago and it worked well for me. I don't believe things have changed too much since then.

Numbeo breaks it down a little further and is suggesting x2 or there abouts.

Don't scrutinize into cost of eggs and milk. It will do your head in.

Also look for wage rates in Sydney for your position, there are a number of comparison sites like PayScale.com where you can even search by employer for large companies plus jobs on seek. Worth noting that many do not state salary but the search function will help to isolate them as the employer has to indicate a salary band even if it is not visible.

Also check if that amount is pre or post compulsory super contributions. Agree with above at least 2x as a minimum, depending on the field of work.

Thanks both. Those figures do not include pension on top (employer contributes 10 percent, I contribute 5).

Also, I found a useful website.

<<<SNIP>>>

It calculates your earnings abroad based on cost of living. I inputted the details and it came back with 165,000 base (roughly 2.36 my current salary), which is interesting and gives a great benchmark overall.

I don't like the look of that website. All the personal information you input, such as your current salary, country, city and email address is kept and 'passed on to our business partners'.

This one might be fun to play around with too, don't know how accurate it is but you don't have to input any personal info that'll get you spammed, so that's a bonus.

The problem with these costs of living sites is the vast differences between suburbs etc and they also don't take into account tax level differences. That's why using Smart Expat feels legitimate because it covers almost everything expat variables.

The site you refer to also sends your data to their 'business partners', you don't get your 'free simulation' unless you agree to this. And it's a for profit site with nearly all information chargeable. Sorry, but it just sounds like a new member advertising a data mining and for profit service.

I definitely don't work for <<<SNIP>>> or one of their business partners for the record, this is purely information sourcing for my own benefit. But I see your point re the website sending data to their business partners for their own use.

Welcome to BE.

When a new member posts the name of a website/company it is usually someone spamming the forums. We get dozens of these types of posts every day. Therefore please forgive us being sceptical. I hope you will prove us wrong, and that you will stick around and become a valued member of BE.
