Hi all,

So I have recently decided that I want to move to Australia from London. I want to get as much advice and help as possible so here is what I am planning. Please bare in mind if anything I say is incorrect or sounds like its not feasible, that is the reason I am here. To get tips on how to do it all properly.

So I am currently working a job that will allow me to save around £700 a month towards the Australia fund. I am hoping to move around mid August to early September. Thats a minimum of £4200 I will have saved. In all reality, considering I have recently taken on more hours, I can save more. Now I need to subtract the cost of my working holiday visa and flights. Then I need to look for a room and a job. So here are my questions.

1. How much money, after the flights and visa, would be a good amount to have in the bank?

2. Whats a good sight to look for jobs and accommodation?

3. Where do I apply for a visa and what is the likely hood of me getting it? Plus cost?

4. Sydney or Melbourne? Both have their good points but I am stuck between the two. I want to be in a city at first so that I can settle in easily, and get a job too. Please give me points on which you think is a better option and why.

5. What do I need to apply for? i.e bank, the Australian version of NI, medical insurance, anything to do with taxes, informing the government. Anything that a person living there needs basically. Also, what do I need to do on this end with all of that. I don't expect I can just up and move without informing the British government or whoever that I am going. And am I giving myself enough time? Is 6 months enough?

If you can help me on any of these points, or can add any thing else, I would really appreciate it. I am dead set on moving and I want to have everything sorted come August.

Thanks for all that. I was planning on staying for as long as my visa allowed and hopefully getting sponsored after that. I have connections in Australia so hopefully I could get one easily. How does sponsorship work?

Right now I am working as a head receptionst in hospitality. I was speaking to an Italian girl from work the other day and she lived in Australia for 3 years as she had a been sponsored. She was working as a waitress... not exactly a skill that is in high demand. Anybody can do that job.

I dont have any skills that would be useful. I finished high school and did a psychology course for a year but thats it. I dont have any qualifications. I dont intend on living there permanently. Just for 2 or 3 years. Its more about a new experience than a whole new life. Eventually I will want to come back to Britain.

Without an occupation on either the sol or CSOL, you can not be sponsored.

I have friends who have gone from a WHV, to sponsorship, to PR and are now citizens, so it can be done

I doubt that your current skill set would allow you do do this though

Same. I have a mate who came on a holiday, without any qualifications, and is now a full citizen in a very successful sales job. He was always very good at blagging his way around and obviously still is.

Many people have gone from a WHV to citizen. Although it isn't designed for that purpose it happens....to totally disregard it, is not right.

As for the Italian friend well she was clearly working illegally. Australia is much easier to migrate to than other countries yes...but you need more than what your experience entails.

Ahem! Actually my partner got a 100 visa and we are not married. It did take 8months to process though.

Also I put forward that the cost of living is approximately the same as the UK. However the difference will be that you don't have the means to save money right away as you will be paying more for less.

I have not endured Australia even one year yet and I am already established. It was most trying up until a month ago. Australia is a wannabe draconian society - if only they were competent enough. Anyway I moved over with < £3k and I found a job within 1 month and am just about getting settled now.

Much depends on you, your lifestyle and what line of work you are in. I don't think the more the better because desperation isn't a bad driver for self improvement. I'd recommend £5k.

There are actually a few more options than what you gave. I know someone who arrived on a WHV and actually got it extended to 5 years. I agree that its probably not "easy" as such.

If you know of 'a few more options', then how about you spell them out for the OP, instead of telling others that they haven't given enough info?

I wouldn't be giving advice based on "I know someone who etc etc" though - such advice is at best tenuous, and at worst misleading.

With all due respect I've had received a fair amount of poor advice and plain incorrect information from these forums. Its not all bad though as its an open forum where people like you can chuck their penny into the hat and it opens up discussions and ideas.

If you report the posts with incorrect info they will be checked and removed. Just whinging about them won't help anyone.

I have removed all my posts as you appear to think the info is wrong.Hopefully with your superior knowledge you can let the OP know how best to move to Australia It won't be on a 100 though, unless they are married to an Aussie PR or citizen, or eligible New Zealander. Could you also let the many people who ask about extending their WHVs, how they can get one that lasts 5 years?

Ha ok be like that if you must. But lets not pretend any of us are Australian immigration lawyer specialists though. And by the way I wasn't having a pop at you when I said I had received a lot of misaligned information. Your opinion is as valid as anyone else's here on this forum. I was actually quipping about more light hearted matters such as regions to live (the negativity towards Logan for example).

Your post stated that I was giving an incorrect picture about available visas. That is why I have removed my information., I don't give visa "advice" as I am not qualified to do so and would be breaching Australian law if I did. It certainly had nothing to do with Logan - the only contact I have with that suburb is when I despatch the SES there to fix leaky roofs.
