How do you guys that don't have a job and have a family decide where to set up home ??
I just don't know where to look for a rental!!!
State Sponsorship for VIC OH is an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer i look at places like Mornington, people say to far away for work, Point Cook maybe ?
Then i looked at Broadmeadows, close to Airport etc, people say don't live there.....im spending my life just reading everything on expats!!!

Hi,

Our priority no 1 was securing good government schools for the kids so we began by identifying them first. To get into most of them you need to be in the priority enrolment (catchment) area so we ended up with our list of suburbs that way. Next priority was being in a nice but affordable area as close as possible to likely work prospects and with decent amenities. With us my OH set her heart on a single main school which meant that we only had about 4 or 5 suburbs to choose from but you can have several - to widen your scope. Early on it seemed like a near impossible task but things amazingly fell into place very quickly.

Now we just need the same success for at least one of us with work.

My suggestion to you would be to set up a priority list to determine what you wants/needs are:

Schools important?
Kids must be able to walk/cycle to school?
Public transport important?
Garden important
Garage?
What local facilities do you want/need?
etc..
...
...
...

Good luck :fingerscrossed:

Public transport is almost non-existent coming from and going to the airport(s). How far does your OH want to travel?

This is a good list to start with. Add to it how much rent you want to pay. Also, being Australia, you need to specify if you want to be near beaches, as it seems most migrants put that at the top of their list. Then just ask on here for suburb suggestions and we'll try to help

I live in a great suburb about 20-25 minutes drive from Tullamarine Airport (outside rush hour though :o) with good public transport, good school, super friendly locals and decent sized houses though not near the beach (only 45 minutes from one though...). PM me if you want more info:)

i looked into this kind of thing, but i don't believe any one ever gets a housesit, and the companies probably just make their money from registrations!
we never got an enquiry let alone a response from any of the people offering housesits that i wrote to!

Good thread guys. Some great advice.

Though makes the prospect of flat hunting in Sydney all the more daunting

Sure we'll get there though.
