I have recently been sponsored by the South Australian Government and intend to emigrate on an SIR visa later this year.

I would like to purchase a property when I arrive rather than rent for 3 years. I understand that I need permission off the FIRB to purchase a property but as I do not have enough money to purchase outright I was wondering whether banks offer mortgages to temporary residents . Does anyone know how I stand re obtaining a mortgage on a 3 year temporary residents visa also bearing in mind that my employment will only be on a temporary basis until I can apply for permanency? (My occupation is a primary school teacher should this make any difference!)

We are also temporary residents and were able to gain a mortgage with no bother at all. We could only borrow a maximum of 80% of property value so you must have a sizeable deposit.
