More advice needed

Looking at travel insurance for our one way journey from UK to Perth? Seems that most insurers want a return date. Have found a couple online...just wondering if anyone can recommend anyone or share their experience before we get quotes.....thanks

What are you looking to insure against? I would not have thought many people would insure the journey over. It did not even occur to me to do so.

Same as we would any holiday journey I suppose.....flight cancellations, loss/damage to baggage and medical emergency. It didn't occur to me not to.....perhaps we don't need to and that why it's difficult to find....?

Seems a bit unnecessary to me, unless you have some very expensive luggage I suppose. Medical emergency in transit, the odds are surely remote indeed? (And I am not insurance averse here, indeed I have spent some years working in financial services and insurance industry).

Nevertheless how about these:

Thanks for the link....and yes I can see your point (I am insurance averse!..I daren't count the amount of money I've paid in premiums over the years!). At this stage, as we haven't got confirmation yet, it's just research and I'm open minded to any opinions....so thank you for taking the time to express yours. :-)

Well is seems cheap enough anyway. But I expect they rarely get claims and make a good margin on it. ;)

You need insurance for the trip and also to cover yourself for the first few days or weeks even until you can get Medicare, house contents insurance etc set up.

We found the Post Office did a reasonable one way travel insurance and you can choose the number of days you want. Although we couldn't book in online, we had to ring them. But you can go online to get the number.

Don't want to really put the OP off getting insurance by any means, there is certainly nothing wrong with having it, it is just not something that I deemed necessary for us. But they would be covered by reciprocal medicare upon arrival and most people don't have any house contents with them those first few weeks. And house contents would presumably need a house contents policy.

I'm with Bermudashorts on this one, we didn't bother, if you travel with a reputable airline that is a member of IATA you will have pretty much a guarantee of getting to your destination, with missing or damaged baggage again you have a claim against the airline, the only reason I can think for getting the insurance is if you become sick in transit, so sick that you need medical/hospital treatment outside of the UK or Australia, once in Australia you as a British citizen have a reciprocal health care agreement until such time as you have the medicare card in hand. I am also not trying to put the OP off getting insurance just pointing out why I thought it was a low risk for us to not bother. One thing we do have is with our credit card, if we pay for our travel on it we get the comprehensive insurance provided by them, I think this is pretty common now so may be worth checking out.
