Default Mordialloc - what is it like

Hi all,

anyone know Mordialloc and/or surrounding areas? Looking for a nice place to live near the beach. Like everyone else - looking for the perfect place to live!! Obviously we will have to compromise a bit but ideally looking for:

* Nice area
* Good community
* Good beaches
* Not a tourist hot spot
* Low crime / safe place
* Not a party place but still some cafes / bars etc

DOes Mordialloc fit the bill?????

Mordialloc is ok, beach of Nepean Highway is best as its a bit industrial the other side although they have redeveloped the old racecourse into a sort of upmarket estate, but it comes out on to White Street which is a traffic snarl so not a place I would choose too noisy even with the sound barrier banks they have put around it.

Mostly old houses a lot of them have been renovated, small shopping centre but near to better shopping centres, Mentone has a nice village shopping centre and its not too far to Southland.

Some trains used to run to Mordialloc and start there do not know if they still do. Not much parking at the station.

If you go over the otherside of the Nepean Highway anywhere round Mentone Cheltenham if you were interested in buying check that the property is not in the airport zone.

Ok beach but the Modialloc Creek runs out there and they have cleaned it up a lot so probably ok now.

There is a pipe running into the bay up near the Hotel next to the Esplanade Hotel about opposite St Bedes College.

Good schools around there private and government, St Bedes boys Catholic college, Kilbreda girls Catholic, Mentone Grammar, not far to Haileybury college at Keysborough, St Leondards College is also not far away. These are all private schools. Mordialloc High, Parkdale High, Mentone Girls public schools.

Mordialloc is one of the few places I would consider living. I visited it regularly when we were renting in Aspendale Gardens. The beach isn't the best in the area (I much prefer the white sands of Chelsea/Seaford) but the creek with its fishing boats gives it a lot of character. There seems of be a good selection of bars and cafes and the High Street, again, has some character to it.

The train journey to the city is circa 40 mins (though Buzzy can confirm that). Seems to have a real mix of residents, due to the mix of older established housing and the snazzy new townhouses etc.

It's actually pretty challenging to live beachside of the Nepean in Mordialloc - that amounts to about 2 streets!

We live on the "sort of upmarket estate", actually just a normal estate with the standard smattering of 42 square Porter Davis homes on teeny blocks. You can't hear the noise from White Street at all although the East of the estate gets noise from Boundary Road. There's a lot of new townhouses going up between the Epsom Park estate and White street which remind me of UK Barrett housing estates but with even smaller gardens. Not keen on them but I know a lot of people buy them who don't want to do gardening.

We're building in the older part of Mordialloc. It is lovely there, very very quiet indeed. If we're on the block and we hear a car go past we actually look up to see who it is!

Mordialloc is a great area for young families. We live within walking distance of three stunning beaches, there's a lovely pier and boardwalk for evening walks and of course the creek which reminds me of a cornish fishing village with all the little wooden boats moored there. There are some very good restaurants. On Sunday we had breakfast at a cafe right on the water's edge
with an amazing view of blue seas and blue skies.

There's loads for kids to do here. Mordialloc has the best swimming pool school in Victoria, there's little nippers on the beach in summer which teaches kids of all ages water safety, lots of tennis and cricket facilities. There are some great kindies and playgroups and a very useful toy library.

It's 40 mins to the CBD by train or 30 mins drive.

I would recommend it to anyone.

One of the few suburbs we would live in. I don't know why but when I reach Mordialloc I always feel like I am not too far from home, even though I live 30 minutes away.

A good main street possibly lacking in a few bars and places to have a meal at night, but nice all the same. They have the best barbers I have ever been to Hair A1Max and the best and cheapest bakers Paris hot bread

I know the so called "up market estate" and we know people who live there and it is very nice and I travel through there most days and haven't noticed a traffic bottleneck there.

There is a main line train station and when I used to work in the CBD it always seemed like a lot of Russians got on and off there.

Hope this helps.

The area around Denyer reserve is okay but best streets have to be McDonald and Bear.

Ha ha John that is a challenge. Its review time!!! Here's my list of all the places I can think of to eat and drink in Mordi while sitting at my keyboard at 5.30 in the morning -

On the main street

Manow - The best Thai restaurant I have ever been to anywhere in the world. We go there almost every week and have never had a bad meal.
Mordi's Pizza Pasta place - haven't been there yet but seems busy.
Cafe Blah Blah - always packed. Serves everything from coffee to tapas.
Sun Wah chinese place - been there once and it wasn't good
Doyles - excellent breakfasts and main meals in an upmarket pub atmosphere. Sea views from many tables.
Level 1 - part of the pub at the northern end of the street. Similar to Doyles for food, all tables have sea views. There's also another restaurant in the same building downstairs.
Bar Black - live music / DJ bar for the younger crowd
Mordialloc Cellar door - Serves unusual wines from small growers. Bring your own food. Excellent for socialising for the more mature crowd, every time I have been there I have always struck up conversations with people at adjoining tables, it's a "one big family" atmosphere
The Bridge - attached to Doyles. Has food and a pub with a dance floor and pool tables.

There's also on the main street -

2 charcoal chicken
2 fish and chips
1 chinese takeaway
Couple of cafes
a Subway

Not directly on the main street

Seed - All organic cafe, amazing breakfasts and coffee, tapas Friday nights
The Bay - More good pub food, Bands and DJs 3 nights a week, Blues on Sunday afternoons I think.
Windows on the Bay - expensive fine dining restaurant right on the beach with stunning sea and sunset views.

I may have forgotten a couple but that's not too bad for a suburb with a population of 7000 is it?

We lived in the area for 11 years and I worked in Mordialloc so just my views of how I felt about it and I am pleased others see what I could not. Horses for courses.

Hi Simon

I didn't say there wasn't places to eat, but most of them are either takaways or cafe's

Bar Black appears to have shut down as it has it's windows boarded up. I think it could do with a couple of restaurants that are similar to Doyles. Places that a couple can go and have a decent meal.

Got to second that! Huge fan of Thai and there are 2+ in most suburbs, most of which I think we have tried. Haven't found one fresher and more flavoursome than Manow Thai. Great delivery service too...only downside is the toilets being down the steps outside of the restaurant..

We are in the next suburb towards the city from Mordialloc, Parkdale where we have been for 2.5 years after 4 years in Beaumaris. LOVE this area. PM if you require further info on the area.

If my mate Buzzy says it's good, it's good....

The strip reminds me a little of a UK beach town - a fair bit of character. But many Victorian strips do.
