I don't count the pathetic sleet stuff! I want a full on white christmas! I want the village to look like a scene out of Bridget Jones! It snowed here badly in March this year, the village looked beautiful, but it was March not december! Temps have warmed up around here now so white xmas looking unlikely!

Oh and the fry up was lovely this morning! Now snuggled up for the afternoon watching eastenders!

Britain has a very mild climate for Northern Europe due to the effect of the gulf stream. This means we rarely get more than a couple of days of snow per year. It's not like countries who have snow all winter and therefore have the means to cope with it.
Vash just likes being a troll. he regularly slags off Britain on this site but unfortunately has not yet decided to take himself back home.

Or a good storm, the few in qld in one recent weekend caused 10 road deaths, all attributed in to plain old rain.

Read the "hope everyone in brisbane is OK" thread for a description of a spring storm in brissie.

Agree with jugsy, Vash is just a troll.

Couldn't agree more.

The 2003 Canberra bushfire was not something that was forecast. The fires hard started some 10 days before in rugged virtually inaccessible country well away from Canberra.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canberra_bushfires_of_2003
"The beginning
Fires had been burning in the adjoining Kosciuszko National Park to the west of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) since January 8, 2003 when lightning strikes had started some 150 fires.

On 13 January, a helicopter that had been waterbombing the fires in the forests west of Canberra crashed into Bendora Dam, and ACT Chief Minister Jon Stanhope, who was reviewing the progress of the fires, was one of the rescuers.

Saturday January 18
As strong winds and high temperatures continued into the morning of Saturday, January 18, residents in rural areas west and north-west of the city were told to prepare for the worst. Two fires continued to burn out of control in the Namadgi National Park, with the entire park, along with the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve being closed due to the threat. A second fire in the Brindabella Ranges was threatening to break containment lines.

The hot dry windy conditions on the day combined with numerous broad fronts of the fire, the extremely rapid spread of fire into residential areas, the loss of daylight turning 'day into night', the power failures, communication failures, the lack of equipment and resources to fight such a massive fire, etc.

There are movies, images and stories of the Canberra fire here http://canberrafires.xsnet.org/. :scared:

Not many major national capitals have been so affected by a natural disaster.

Sydney likewise has bad fires, Yorke Penisula earlier this year.

At least snow is predictable.

WW

PS The Great Western highway out of Sydney is usually closed by police when it snows on the Blue Mountains.

The Eyre peninsula bushfire was made worse by a catalogue of incompetence by the authorities.
http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems...1/s1280272.htm

There is an enquiry ongoing in Port Lincoln (started last week while I was there).

Some farmers are actually suing for compensation.

We were camping in Clare at the time. The smell of the smoke was quite strong and waited for the sirens..... and waited......

Had to wait for the radio news to realise why there were no sirens... After that was more worried about a tree branch coming down due to the wind.
